Adam Hughes joins growing Portsmouth Comic Con 2020 guest list

Adam HughesPortsmouth Comic Con – International Festival of Comics has announced multiple Eisner, Harvey and Inkpot award-winning and New York Times best-selling author, Adam Hughes, to its increasingly impressive Artists Alley line-up for 2020 sponsored by Catawiki.

The largest event of its kind in the South of England is set to return to Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May with Atlanta-based Adam Hughes joining the prestigious Artist Alley of guests already published including Marguerite Sauvage, Janet K Lee, Roy Richardson, June Brigman, Katie Schenkel and The Etherington Brothers, with many more yet to be announced!

Known for illustrating strong, beautiful women like Wonder Woman, Catwoman and Tomb Raider, the perfect fit for the 2020 Con’s ‘Celebration of Female Superheroes’ feature on the Saturday, Hughes is currently drawing strong, beautiful monsters like Hellboy.

The world really is Hughes’ oyster with the illustrious guest himself suggesting that anything is possible between now and the Con. “Pulitzer Prize? Possible. Nobel Peace Prize? Stranger things have happened. Arrested for public urination? More than Likely!”

Joining Adam in Portsmouth are husband-wife team June Brigman and Roy Richardson, who have had long careers in comic books/ strips, starting with June’s co-creation of the Power Pack series for Marvel. Roy co-created the Tomorrow Knights Epic series, and had a long run on The Flash, which DC is presently reprinting.

The pair did the art for the “Brenda Starr” strip for 15 years, and currently illustrate the “Mary Worth” strip. They live in Atlanta with their ten cats, where June teaches part time at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Roy is working on a book of short stories entitled Hillbillies Prefer Blondes.

You won’t find a more energetic and inspiring duo than Lorenzo and Robin, aka The Etherington Brothers, who are also on the event’s line-up.

Dedicated to inspiring young people to follow their comic art dreams through their comics and unique interactive shows and, at the same time, being premier league artists and writers.

The Etherington Brothers have been making all-ages comic adventures for over a decade, and are the creators of Long Gone Don, Monkey Nuts, Freaky and Fearless, Baggage and Von Doogan.

They have also created comics, stories and art for Star Wars, How to Train Your Dragon, Transformers, Kung Fu Panda, Wallace & Gromit and James Bond.

The brothers have toured the world performing sold out shows on creativity and storytelling. Using their unique blend of humour, improvisation and enthusiasm, they have empowered hundreds of thousands of children to take their first creative steps into the greatest storytelling medium on earth – COMICS!

Janet K Lee

Janet K Lee

Janet K Lee made her first foray into illustration in 2010 by co‐creating the Eisner‐winning graphic novel Return of the Dapper Men with writer Jim McCann. Lee went on to illustrate the Marvel Comics adaptations of two of Jane Austen’s novels, Emma and Northanger Abbey, as well as six other books and anthologies. Her subsequent work has received both Harvey and Eisner nominations.

Her most recent book, Sea Sirens, is a middle‐grade graphic novel about the fantastic adventures of a girl named Trot and her surfing cat who visit the mermaid kingdom.

Lee is currently working on Sky Island, the next Trot and Cap’n Bill adventure, which comes out Summer, 2020. She remains active in her local art community, teaching comics workshops in partnership with her local library.

Marguerite Sauvage

After graduating in Law and Communication at Paris University, a longtime passion for image conducted Marguerite Sauvage to become a freelance illustrator.

She has since worked for various clients in many fields such as in press (Elle, Flaunt), advertising (Publicis, Euro RSCG, Young and Rubican) or publishing (Penguin Books, Hachette). More recently, she’s started working in parallel for entertainment in concept design (animation and video games), and in sequential art and cover art for comic books publishers (DC, Marvel, Image).

After several years of living in France, and then in Australia, Marguerite recently moved to live in the city of Montréal.

Katie Schenkel

Katie Schenkel

Katie Schenkel is a Chicago-based comic writer best known for the werewolf comic Moonlighters and the critically acclaimed kids graphic novel The Cardboard Kingdom. Her upcoming comics include Alice, Secret Agent of Wonderland and the sports book Basketball Camp Champ.

Celebrating the best of comics, film, TV and pop culture entertainment for aficionados, fans and families alike, Portsmouth Comic Con features incisive panels, interactive fun in the form of VR experiences, robots, retro and board gaming plus cosplay, exhibitions, displays, workshops and a Comic City packed full of merchandise and collectables.

In addition to the special ‘Celebration of Female Superheroes’ on the Saturday of the Con there will be ‘A World of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ on the Sunday featuring daily child and adult cosplay parades hosted on GoGeek Event’s School of Wizards stage.
