Zakk Ridley from Orang Utan Press set to stun

limited edition convention exclusive copy of The Intergalactic Adventures of Zakk Ridley #1

Those darn fine indie publishers Orang Utan Comics are offering something special for visitors to next month’s Thought Bubble comic art festival in Leeds – a limited edition convention exclusive copy of the totally stunning-looking The Intergalactic Adventures of Zakk Ridley #1, by Ian Sharman (Alpha Gods/Hero: 9 to 5) and Pete Rogers (The Interactives) with stunning fully painted art by Winchester-based Ewan McLaughlin.

zakk_ridley_01-panel01Zakk Ridley is just your average smuggler and rogue until he and his robotic partner, Dan, get caught up in an intergalactic conspiracy. Zakk dreams of an easy life roaming the galaxy and making a fast buck or two, but as they say, in space no one can hear you dream…

Grab this limited edition convention exclusive copy of The Intergalactic Adventures of Zakk Ridley #1, featuring the opening 22 pages of this eagerly anticipated space adventure yarn, out in hardback from AAM/Markosia in March, for just £4!  You can pre-order this full colour comic for pick up at Thought Bubble in Leeds on 23rd-24th November 2013 or for mail order delivery after the convention.

zakk_ridley_01-panel02“This book has been in the works for years and people are always asking me when it’ll be out,” says series creator, Ian Sharman. “I’m very excited that it’ll finally be out in March next year…b ut we just couldn’t wait any longer to start sharing it with people! So we decided to do an exclusive limited edition run of the first issue for Thought Bubble.

“We don’t want our fans who can’t make it to the show to miss out though, so we’re offering a mail order pre-order too, but pre-orders will close on the Friday morning before the convention and numbers are strictly limited, so get it now or…well…you’ll just have to wait to get the whole thing in hardback in March!”

“If my memory serves me correctly it was back in 2006 that I began working on the sci fi comic book that is now Zakk Ridley,Pete Rogers recalled earlier this year. “Lots has changed since then. The titular hero is on his third name and the project has been developed with a number of different artists along the way (I’m thinking it’s seven by now).

“Ian Sharman and I met on the Visionary Comics Studio forums that year, and he approached me to take his plot and turn it into a mini series. I think it was the second mini series I ever wrote (after my own space opera Viva Las Venus), and the first time I’d ever worked from someone else’s plot.  My writing was a little rough around the edges and was perhaps a little decompressed, but I had good ideas about structure and foreshadowing that enhanced what Ian had already put to paper.

When the book was first picked up by Markosia I remember Tony Lee, who was mentoring us both at the time, saying it was the best thing either of us had worked on.”

Orang Utan is one of the UK’s leading independent comics publishers. Founded in 2007 by Ian Sharman and Peter Rogers, they hit the UK comics scene running with the launch of Eleventh Hour, an anthology title which picked up an Eagle Award nomination for Favourite Black & White British Comic Book after its initial two issues.

zakk_ridley_01-panel03Since then they’ve gone on to release several popular series, including Alpha Gods, FTL, Particle Fiction, Shrapnel: Case Files and the Comixology Comixologist’s Choice Award winning Hypergirl. They’ve also worked with Matt Dyson and Mike Georgiou to produce trade paperback collections of their comics, Moo & Keo and Elemental Micah.

The company work closely with AAM/Markosia, who handle most of their digital distribution, and have also developed a number of titles that have been or will be published by them, including Eleventh Hour, Hero: 9 to 5, Hypergirl and, of course, the forthcoming Intergalactic Adventures of Zakk Ridley and Shrapnel: Case Files.
