Judgement is due… in Scunthorpe!

(With thanks to Kev Levell for the tip off and Pete Wells for permission touse some of his photos): An exhibition of art work featuring 2000AD‘s Judge Dredd is currently running at the Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire until 7th December 2013.

The exhibition, called simply Judge Dredd, features a gallery of original artwork mostly from the pages of 2000AD and Judge Dredd The Megazine between the 1970s and the 2000’s. The work has been loaned from collectors and the artists/creators themselves and includes art by the likes of Brian Bolland, Ian Gibson, Chris Weston, Ron Smith, Mick Austin and more.

The second half of the exhibition presents the work of illustrators, photographers (including 2000AD designer Steve Cook), painters, prop sculptors and film makers who grew up with the character and includes art from creators such as David Hancock, Pete Wells, Pete McKee and Kev Levell – some comic artists, some better known in other fields of art.

Scunthorpe also has its first sci-fi event, SciFest, this Sunday (3rd November) at the Baths Hall should you wish to combine a visit to the town. The event includes a Doctor Who themed comic art masterclass with Kev F Sutherland, who has produced sci-fi comics for the Doctor Who Magazine, fan films, plus props and some familiar faces from the big and small screen – bring your camera or make use of the on-site photobooth.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
