Back in my days as editor of Marvel UK’s Doctor Who Magazine, I commissioned a number of illustrations to accompany a plethora of text stories that formed part of the title, new tales of the Doctor and companions to keep fans happy while some at the BBC tried to bury the show they have just celebrated in grand style as it deservedly celebrates its 50th year.

Artists included Colin Howard, Alister Pearson, Richard Elson, Peter Wallbank, Gary Erskine and many others – and Paul Vyse, a graphic designer and artist who went on to work as designer on the magazine for three years, but whose more recent credits include Art Editor on IPC’s best-selling What’s On TV magazine, a position he held for 13 years.

He’s now a freelance designer and artist, hoping to devote more time to his painting and has an exhibition, ‘Caught Unaware’ at the Reading Room Gallery in Frith Street, London, opening 6th January 2014 and running until 7th February 2014.

“I’ve always drawn and painted – done lots of published illustration work – but only in the last few years have started painting on canvas properly, something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Paul. “My work tends to be inspired by life around me – people caught unawares, or in relation to their surroundings… kind of ‘reportage’ painting, I guess.”

A graduate of Canterbury College of Art with a degree in Graphic Design in 1988, he has exhibited four times at the Attic Gallery in Swansea (www.atticgallery.co.uk), including their 50th anniversary summer exhibition in 2012, and is currently part of their Winter Group Show in 2013/14.

The exhibition is purely non-genre, some fantastic images conjured from Paul’s observations of London life, but well worth visiting, in my view. You can see more of his genre art on his official web site (and some great cat paintings!).
