Arvon announces Graphic Novel Writing with Bryan Talbot and Leah Moore

Placeholder - Call for PapersThe Arvon Foundation has just announced it will be running a residential creative writing course, Graphic Novel Writing with Bryan Talbot and Leah Moore, at the end of July (28th July – 2nd August).

Running at The Hurst in Shropshire, the course will help creators develop an idea for a graphic novel, or offer expert feedback on how your script is progressing. Or perhaps just simply want a week dedicated to work on your graphic novel away from distractions – in which case  this beautiful country house location in Shropshire is ideal – the home of Arvon, renowned for its creative writing retreats.

During this week, led by two of Britain’s leading comic writers, Bryan Talbot (The Adventures of Luther ArkwrightDotter of Her Father’s Eyes) and Leah Moore (Doctor Who – The Whispering GalleryThe Thrill Electric), participants will live and breathe all things graphic novel. You’ll be given the information and skills that you’ll need to translate your concepts, of whatever genre, into fully realised scripts for sequential art.

Morning workshops will explore the form of the graphic novel, be that far-flung adventure, low-key character-driven stories, reportage, documentary or autobiography. In the afternoon you will get one-to-one feedback on your work from Bryan and Leah, and plenty of time to write. Each evening will include graphic-novel related events, including a special guest appearance mid-week from Adam Caldwell, creator of Blood Blokes and co-founder of Great Beast Comics.

Arvon has been offering people time and space to write since 1968, offering with expert tuition from leading authors and the support of other like-minded writers and all in a venue in beautiful countryside where you can feed your imagination and let your stories flourish.

Arvon run an annual programme of residential courses and retreats for schools, groups and individuals at our four rural writing houses – in Devon, Inverness-shire, Shropshire and Yorkshire. Their 2014 adult programme covers a wide range of genres, for all levels of experience, from beginners to emerging and published writers.

Thanks to the support of Arts Council England and generous donors, they are also able to offer grants to cover some or all of the course fee. Nine out of ten people who apply receive some support. Find out how to apply here.

The organisation also run Arvon City, a three-day non-residential creative writing courses in city centres. Have a look at our website in summer 2014 for more details.
