Private Eye: A Cartoon History

Continuing a month of shows looking at comic strips and controversy on Britain’s only regular comics radio show Panel Borders, guest presenter Tom Sutcliffe talks to Nick Newman (author of Private Eye: A Cartoon History) and magazine editor Ian Hislop about memorable and controversial cartoons and strips in the best-selling fortnightly periodical.

Celebrating the very best cartoons from Britain’s premier publisher of humorous art, Nick’s Private Eye: A Cartoon History features more than 1,000 of the funniest jokes ever drawn for the title: a decade by decade chronicle of the gags and issues that tickled the nation’s funny bone sometimes with a sledgehammer.

For over 50 years Private Eye has published topical jokes, strips and stand-alone cartoons many of which have become comedy classics. Private Eye A Cartoon History provides a comprehensive record of the magazine’s contribution to visual humour, featuring thumbnail profiles of the magazine’s top artists and a cartoonist s view of the joke-making process.

The interview was reccorded at the Victoria and Albert Museum, November 2013.
