British Comic Shop Comic Releases (3rd September 2014) – Carpe Diem, The Void and more

Here’s a list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops from tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd September 2014, courtesy of First Age Comics, Lancaster. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of.

Releases include 2000AD Issue 1897 (also on sale in newsagents) and #59 of Elephantmen from Image Comics, written by Richard Starkings with art from 2000AD regular Boo Cook. If you haven’t read this stunning comic before, then why not catch up with the Elephantmen Mammoth Volume Book One, released back in July.

Titan Comics have a slew of titles out this week including Sally of the Wasteland #2 and the Carpe DIEm: I Hate Mondays graphic novel. Meet the world’s seven greatest, colour-coded secret agents (one for each day of the week, though everybody hates Mondays)!

When danger rears its ugly head, it’s up to this motely band of super spies to issue the bloody-knuckled makeover. Whether they’re dishing out justice to satanic chefs, kicking giant kaiju butt, or saving the world from killer clowns, it’s all just other day’s work for these half-baked hired heroes.

Definitely worth checking out is The Void we enthused about previously, a thriller from Herik Hanna, the writer of Bad Ass and Sean Phillips, the artist of Fatale and the awesome new series Fade to Black. Goliath 01, a prison ship, drifts listlessly through. The ship’s commander, Colonel Mercer, has massacred everyone on board – inmates and crew alike, except one. John, the lone survivor, cowers in the bowels of the carrier, desperate to escape the ship. But the howling void of space makes the best prison of all…

And of course there’s the much-anticipated collection of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, written by Michael Mendheim, Mike Kennedy and Sean Jaffe with stunning art from Simon Bisley. Raised by the ancient Order of Solomon, Adam Cahill is one of a rare handful of highly trained warriors bound by bloodline to guard the Seven Holy Seals that contain the End of Days.

But ageless forces have conspired towards a prophetic event foretold by numerous cultures and multiple religions… and when that cryptic date arrives, they strike against the order without mercy!

The collection includes all-new bonus features including covers, posters and concept art by the Eisner Award-winning Bisley himself.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
