It’s great news that John Wagner and Alan Grant are collaborating on a new series with artist Dan Cornwell. Rom of the Reds (no, not that ROM!) is a new series being published by Black Hearted Press.

Rom of the Reds is the a six-part series about what happens when the lives of a dangerous intergalactic refugee and an arrogant footballer collide. With his home world destroyed, Rom of Arkadi is on the run and needs a hiding place. And that hiding place happens to be troubled football star Kyle Dixon…

John and Alan are responsible for writing such classic strips like “Judge Dredd”, “Strontium Dog” for 2000AD, Judgement on Gotham, Lobo and so on and, like a lot of their work, Rom features their trademark black humour and twisted sense of fun. They’ve handpicked newcomer Dan Cornwell to do the art, and he’s been doing a great job on it.

The art looks epic in the pages they have sent us and Dan has a really great sense of scale in his work that really brings back the glory days of John Byrne. I’m really excited to see the whole finished product as these pages are really polished for a newcomer. He’s just finished some work for the mighty Dogbreath, and the digital anthology 100% Biodegradable and his Dredd poster for the recent Sunderland Comic Convention were all top notch. I see great things ahead for this guy.

“How lucky can an artist get,” he told me, “not only to work with the legends John Wagner and Alan Grant but also to work on a whole new character that combines Sci-Fi and football!

“Drawing alien worlds one day and a run down stadium the next. This story is a joy to draw.”

It’s great to see these two wittily laconic Scottish writers on a book that will undoubtedly poke fun at a several British places and traditions (not to mention, offer a humorous take on football!).

John Wagner spoke about this series with great humour at last year’s NICE Convention with Chris Thompson. You can pop over to PopCultureHound and listen to the panel for free.

Many thanks for reading.
