European Literature Night 2016 Date Set

European Literature Night (ELN), the British annual literary showcase which brings the best of the continent’s writers to the British Library, has announced its Call for Participation for 2016 is now open with the Night itself set to 11th May 2016.

A EUNIC London project (a network of National Institutes for Culture from the member states of the European Union in London), ELN promotes European literature of all genres in English translation – presumably including European comics.

The organisers says the event offers is an “unprecedented opportunity” to introduce to the UK some of the most intriguing voices from modern Europe on 11th May 2016 at the British Library as a part of the ELN 2016.

Nominated writers must be reasonably established in their home country but ideally less well known in the UK; and must have had a book published in English after January 2013 or imminently to be published in English by May 2016.

Nominating partners must be a Cultural Institute or Embassy, literary organisation, educational institution, publisher, bookseller or professional literature practitioner. They may offer nominations of up to three writers each. All pre-selected authors must have backing from the relevant EUNIC London member organisation.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday 11th December 2015.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
