Something For the Weekend – Bone China, Doctor Who and Unmentionables!

Porcelain: Bone China - Cover

Here’s my pick of this week’s list of British creator and British publisher-skewed new comics, including new comics on sale in UK newsagents. This feature covers all titles released from Monday 7th March onwards with most new US comics released on Wednesday 9th March.

There’s some great stuff to look out for this weekend at your local comic shop – not only from the big publishers but from British indie Improper Books, whose MULP: Sceptre of the Sun #1 (reviewed here)and Porcelain: Bone China (reviewed here) titles get comic shop distribution; and US publisher Alternative Comics has released Dawgz by the brilliant Lizz Lunney onto an unsuspecting comics world. Well worth a look, as is Jack Teagle’s The Unmentionables from Big Planet/ Retrofit Comics. Plus, do take a look at the first issue of Baker Street Peculiars by Roger Langridge, on sale from Boom! Studios.

2000AD – on sale in newsagents and comic shops – is really cooling on gas with another all-round smasher of a Prog, with a stunning cover from Tiernen Trevallion. If you haven’t been reading “Judge Dredd: Undercover Klegg” from Rob Williams, D’Israeli and Annie Parkhouse, you’re missing a real treat!

Samurai Comic #1 - Cover B by David Mack

David Mack’s Variant cover for Samurai #1

Over at Titan Comics, this week sees the highly-anticipated release of Samurai #1 by Jean-François Di Giorgio and Frédéric Genêt in an exclusive watercolour variant cover by David Mack. This week also sees the release of Heroes: Godsend #1, a brand-new mini-seres by Heroes: Reborn screenwriter Joey Falco, with art by Roy Allan Martinez.

Not just that, but Titan’s new titles also include the latest adventures of everyone’s favourite Time Lord in Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Volume 3: Hyperion by Robbie Morrison & George Mann with art by Daniel Indro and Mariano Laclaustra and The Twelfth Doctor Year Two #3, the latest issue of the ongoing series by Robbie Morrison and with art by comics rising star Rachael Stott.

Star Trek Ongoing #55Along with King’s Road #2 from Dark Horse Comics, written by Peter Hogan , with art from Phil Winslade and Staz Johnson, one US title you might want to look out for is IDW’s ongoing Star Trek (#55), written by Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen, which offers an all-new story set in the universe of the new Star Trek films, celebrating the life of the most iconic character of them all: Leonard Nimoy’s Spock.

In Part One of this four-part story, the elder Spock joins the last survivors of Vulcan to search the galaxy for a new homeworld. This special series is part of IDW’s 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Star Trek franchise and is a touching tribute to the late, great actor and photographer.

Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS #4 - CoverUK Comics – Newsagents Spotlight

In UK newsagents, look out not only for your favourite titles but a Batman versus Superman Film Special, a Marvel Fact Files She Hulk Special – and if you’re into Colouring Books, be ready for a slew of new “Art of Colour” one shots, just in time for your Easter break if you’re having one.

This month marks the final issue for Titan’s Simpsons Comics Presents with Issue 28, going off sale and into the comics graveyard at the end of the month – but their regular Simpsons Comic – fast approaching its 250th issue! – is alive and kicking and continues to be great fun.

Commando No 4898 – Fight To The LastAs usual, don’t forget that despite some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles) MegaTOXIC and many others.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series. The new part work follows their success with their  Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes range. This relaunch of The Ultimate Graphic Novels collection, first launched in 2012, gives new readers the chance to enjoy this collection from the beginning. The content of the books is the same, however they will be released in a slightly different order.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Aces Weekly Volume 20 PromoNew Digital Comic Picks

Digital releases to look out for include David Lloyd’s fabulous Aces Weekly. Volume 20 has started and subscriptions cost just just £1 a week. And don’t miss out on all the Previous Volumes, which have up to 200 pages including Extras, and in full form feature in an exclusive Week-to-Week facility, which transforms any volume’s serialized stories into continuous comic book-sized narratives.

  1. There is no way that Simpsons Comics Presents is on issue 63. Each title in that series had it’s own numbering. A couple of years ago, they combined them all into one title – Bart & Co. I just looked at the Titan Magazines website. It isn’t up to date, but Bart & Co issue 25 was only out in October. Which should make the current issue 30.

    • Hi James – my apologies – I just checked the data I have access to supplied to retailers and what I’ve used (now corrected) was the Barcode Issue Number, which isn’t the same as the issue number. Simpsons Comics Presents will cease with Issue 28, on sale now, going off sale 30th March. Bizarrley, Simpsons Comic has a barcode number of 47, but the current issue on sale now is 248.
