Earlier this year, the Dublin Comic Con was granted a special license by King Features Syndicate via AllSorts Media to produce a special comic celebrating The Phantom‘s 80th Anniversary. All proceeds from sales of the comic produced are being donated to Tallaght, Crumlin and Temple Street Children’s Hospitals in Dublin.
The comic was an exclusive to Dublin Comic Con which took place in August, but due to huge fan demand, permission has been granted to Phantom Vault to sell copies with some limited signed copies available for sale.
The 80th Anniversary special was also tied in to be part of an initiative by Dublin Comic Con, to showcase the talents of previous unpublished writers and artists or those whose self-published work was under 500 units.
After an open submission process the following creative team was formed: Basil Lim, Sean Hill, Cian Tormey, Cian O’Halloran, Robin Jones, Danny McLaughlin, Derek Keogh, Johnny McMonagle, Ashwin Chacko, Sinead O’Neil, Jerry Higgins, Arif Iqbal, John O’Reilly, David McDonagh, Roisin Young, Karl O’Rowe, Stephen Carey and Dave Williams.
Dublin Comic Con published the comic with Lightning Strike Comics and Pulse College Dublin facilitated group meetings during production.
The comic includes The Phantom’s Origin Strip from May 1939 by Lee Falk and Ray Moore and six brand new original short stories and strips by the contributors, plus two articles on Lee Falk and King Features, with an introduction by Lecturer Dave Williams.
