Lakes International Comic Art Festival – Frequently Asked Questions and Top Tips

LICAF 16 - Martin Rowson

Guardian cartoonist Martin Rowson – just one of many great guests at this year’s Festival, who will also be drawing a mural right outside local MP Tim Farron office!

One of this weekend’s Lakes International Comic Art Festival‘s most dedicated team members, Sharon Tait, has been answering questions about the weekend-long on their Facebook page, with a mix of useful information and some very funny answers. They’re so good – and so useful! – we thought we’d share them here, too.

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival runs from tomorrow, 14th – 16th October 2016. Taking over the town of Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District, the Festival features international comic artists and creators, as well as live drawing, film, exhibitions, comic trails, workshops, performance, master classes, (mostly) free Family Zone and independent publishers.

This Year’s Most Asked Question on Facebook (and answers)

If you have more questions, please allow for the fact that things are getting a bit hectic at Festival HQ…

Charlie Adlard - 2016

Charlie Adlard

Is that zombie bloke coming to the festival?

We don’t like to stereotype comic art creators it seems unfair as many do spend odd hours locked away… in their studios for long hours. If you mean Charlie Adlard — yes he is.

Do you have that illustrator from The Guardian coming?

Martin Rowson? Yes

Tom Gauld? Yes

They do have quite a few others, but anyone specific you are looking for?

Asterix vs Tintin Promotional Art

Do we have to pick Tintin or Asterix?

At the event, yes, or in our online Facebook poll if you want (although a number of people have said they would like to vote for both, which is fine) but in life you can pick many.

Is the Comic Clock Tower free?

Entry into it is free this year. But the building is run by South Lakeland District Council and is probably expensive.

LICAF 16 - How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way the Viz Comic Way: A Masterclass

Are Viz here this year?

Unfortunately yes we tried to cordon off the area but somehow they got through. Sorry Kendal.

Can I get my comic signed by…..?

Comic creators will sign after events, near the location they appeared in with priority being given to those who attended that event. Other signings will take place in The Comic Clock Tower and at Page 45 and other venues.

What are your top event tips?

Me personally? Well, I would pick Craig Thompson his work is so intricate and beautiful. I love his use of line, pattern and how much emotion his work illustrates.

Martin Rowson for his scything and intelligent illustrations especially his recent political images in The Guardian and would love to hear him talk about his opinions on the current political shenanigans (so much to discuss).

The McGarrys, as their work is so witty, colourful and makes me laugh.

Oh and I could so go on…so many to pick.

Any accommodation left?

Kendal Hostel has and many other places to try great B&Bs and always worth asking re any cancellations. Also if you are not fair weather then camping! (My respect if you do as nights are a bit chilly at the mo’)

This page on our web site might help you plan your visit – if you haven’t already!

And here’s a useful map.

Any tickets left for Paco Roca?

Yes – at the moment.

Can I buy tickets on the day?

Yes you can but it is a risk as events can suddenly sell out really fast. If you have someone you really want to see I personally would ensure I had a ticket so you aren’t disappointed.

Where is the nearest cash machine?

Near to where? Kendal has lots and is a town of reasonable size so has banks and building societies. (This is especially for international visitors and guests who have no idea what size of town Kendal is and seem to have read that it is a small town set in a mountainous region).

Do any shops in Kendal sell Marmite?

I didn’t get this question at first but then later saw the news and some good high street stores like Booths, Morrisons, maybe even M&S could have them still on the shelves (please note other supermarkets and brands of yeast extract are available.)

Will my teenager enjoy the Family Zone?

That depends on the teenager but parts of it, yes – but we do have events for all ages. If they want to spend your money, then the Clock Tower is great. If you want to avoid them spending your money, then we have lots of great exhibitions – with free entry.
