Something For The Weekend: Time To Celebrate 40 years of 2000AD!

2000 AD's Greatest: Celebrating 40 Years of Thrill-Power!

Squaxx dek Thargo will be out in force celebrating 40 Years of 2000AD in London this weekend – so how could we not mark this momentous event in this week’s British comic and creator-focused new comics round up with a front and centre plug for 2000AD’s Greatest: Celebrating 40 Years of Thrill-Power!

Some of British comics’ top creators pick their favourite one-off stories from 2000AD‘s 40 year run in this terrific collection, a great combination of the fun, the action-packed and the thought-provoking. You’ve got your humorously twisted Future Shocks and dystopian escapades from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog in this excellent compendium and the choices are well worth your Galactic Groats.

Featuring work by Alan Grant, Kevin O’Neill, Rob Williams, Brian Bolland, Chris Weston and Steve Dillon selected by creators such as founding editor Pat Mills, celebrated artist Jock, and recent newcomer Tom Foster, this is like a giant 2000AD, bursting with the kind of craziness that’s made the title the long-running success we all love.

By the way, I’ll be at the show on Saturday, talking to John Higgins, Ian Kennedy and Jesus Redondo on stage. Hope to see some of you there!

Don’t forget the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here), as well as available on subscription.

So let’s not get too downhearted by some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour that only those of us over a certain age remember.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Following the decimation of Mega-City One during Chaos Day, Judges from other “friendly” Justice Departments have been brought in to strengthen the ranks and help maintain law and order on the streets. Among the newcomers is Fintan Joyce, son of a former Emerald Isle Judge, who teamed up with Judge Dredd in one of the most fondly remembered Judge Dredd stories. Exploiting Big Meg’s weakened state, several groups have risen up against the Judges. If things couldn’t get any worse, Dredd has fallen foul of Brit-Cit and they want him in prison or on a slab. Have the odds finally stacked up enough to spell the end of Mega-City One’s greatest lawman?
