Dundee Literary Festival: Comics Events

Following up quickly on our post about the new comic out of Dundee telling the story of biologist D’Arcy Thompson, here’s details of the comics events that are part of this year’s Dundee Literary Festival, which started today.

TALKS AND WORKSHOP
TIME: 2 – 4PM
VENUE: DUNDEE COMICS CREATIVE SPACE (Vision Building, Perth Road)

This symposium celebrates female figures in British Comics, and kicks off with two guest speakers – Dr Julia Round (Principal Lecturer, Bournemouth University), and Dr Joan Ormrod (Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies, Manchester School of Art). Julia’s research interests are in gothic and comics, and children’s literature, while Joan focuses on women in comics and subcultural identities. Both are editors of peer-reviewed journals on comics. The event will be chaired by Olivia Hicks.
The second hour will be a workshop on girls comics with guest artists, where participants can design their own ‘girls comic’ – this promises be a lot of fun!

ROUNDTABLE
TIME: 5 – 7PM
VENUE: TOWER BUILDING

At 5.00pm there will be a reception at the Tower Building foyer, where the Girls in Print exhibition is being shown. At 5.30pm the roundtable on Women in Comics will begin in Baxter 1.36 (Tower Building). The event will feature former DC Thomson sub-editors Rhoda Miller and Rosemary Chivers, who will discuss their work on titles such as Mandy, Bunty, Diana and Spellbound, plus current comics artists Elina Bry of Scottish female comics collective Teen Girl Comic and Rebecca Horner, who recently graduated from the Masters course in Comics & Graphic Novels at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. They will be joined by comics experts Dr Joan Ormrod (Manchester School of Art) and Dr Julia Round (Bournemouth University). The roundtable will be chaired by Olivia Hicks.

LAUNCH PARTY
7PM ONWARDS
VENUE: DUNDEE COMICS CREATIVE SPACE (Vision Building, Perth Road)

Come to the launch of Wilma! This anthology is a homage to girl’s comics, and features comics by Olivia Hicks and Katie Quinn, Alexandra Craven and David Robertson, Joan Ormrod and Zu Dominiak, and Julia Round and Catriona Laird, with a cover by Ashling Larkin. Please join us for the launch of Wilma from 7pm onwards at Dundee Comics Creative Space (DCCS) – there will be free wine!

THURSDAY 19TH OCTOBER: COMICS CARAVAN IN DUNDEE

TIME: 1 – 4PM
VENUE: DUNDEE COMICS CREATIVE SPACE (Vision Building, Perth Road)

Four artist-academics (Bruce Mutard, Stuart Medley, Rachel Ang, andLeonie Brialey) from Australia have picked up their work and embarked on a worldwide journey known as the ‘Comics Caravan’! They will be in Dundee throughout the week and have designed a series of workshops to present between 1 – 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

The workshops will start with Bruce’s talk on his PhD research, “Understanding Comics: some new ways to think about what we’re looking at in comics”, before moving on to two creative workshops.

The first, by Stuart Medley, is a “Comics Character workshop”, designed for cartoonists who can experiment with developing their ‘visual identity’. The second, by Rachel Ang and Leonie Brialey, is entitled “Turning Your Sadness into Something Else: Authenticity/ Sincerity in Aubio Comics”, and will explore the gaps between word and image, and how totranslate autobiographical experiences into comics stories in a fun and practical way.

FRIDAY 20TH OCTOBER: TOM GAULD
TOM GAULD TALK
TIME: 6-7PM
VENUE: BONAR HALL

The comic genius of Tom Gauld will be unveiled at this very special event. Dr Damon Herd will host a conversation with the author of Mooncop and Baking with Kafka. Watch as Professor Chris Murray turns full-on fanboy as he tries to get his hero to sign a well-thumbed and dearly loved copy of You are all Just Jealous of My Jetpack.

SATURDAY 21ST OCTOBER: HANNAH BERRY
TIME: 10.30 – 11.30AM
VENUE: DUNDEE COMICS CREATIVE SPACE (Vision Building, Perth Road)

Join comic creator Hannah Berry as she discusses her recent graphic novel Livestock, a razor-sharp satire on our relationship with the media. Berry (whose previous graphic novels are Britten and Brülightly, 2008, and Adamtine, 2012), will be in discussion with Sasha de Buyl from Creative Scotland.
