Beano, Commando, nominated for Scottish cover awards

Commando 5000 Full Cover

The special Commando Issue 5000 cover by veteran artist Ian Kennedy and a Batman-inspired Beano cover by Nigel Parkinson are among others shortlisted for this year’s PPA Scotland’s Cover of the Year Award.

The DC Thomson comic titles join magazines such as Big Issue and Biologist on the short list this year, all offering eye-catching covers that have done their job and caught the eye of the judges (and, hopefully, prospective readers).

The Commando 5000 cover was chosen because it “encapsulates the traditional tone of Britain’s longest running war comic, depicting a British Commando bravely running into action with a steely look of determination.”

DC Thomson say choosing a Commando to feature as cover star was a natural choice for this landmark issue, harking back to the brand’s conception. The issue combined the talents of some of Commando’s greatest creators, and legendary British comics talent, Ian Kennedy, created the artwork.

Ian has drawn more than 1,200 Commando covers, beginning his career with the comic in the 1970s and of course, the cover is almost entirely hand-drawn.

Beano-Batman - Februyary 2017

The shortlisted Beano by Nigel Parkinson reflects the lives of its readers, but a larger than life slice of that life. “The LEGO Batman Movie was sure to be the biggest thing in our readers’ lives in February,” say DC Thomson. “It was a no-brainer to add a cheeky, mischievous Beano spin… and so Batmin was born!

“It delivers a clever piece of wordplay and a dynamic piece of art – the exact Beano sweet spot!”

Cast your vote here for your favourite. Voting is open until 13th November 2017 and fans can vote once per day until then. The winner will be announced on 23rd November 2017

  1. Splendid! But why only this Commando cover? Every one of the 1,200 plus covers wrought so magnificently by the finest practitioner in the field deserves an award! As Ian Kennedy has been fashioning such incomparable visual treats for nearly seven decades he would need to rent a warehouse to store all those citations, ribbons, gold cups and – more useful, perhaps – flagons of Scotland’s second best product to fill one of those cups after he’s hung up his brushes!

    • The choices are based on last year’s published covers across all magazines and comics published in Scotland, though of course Ian delivered some crackers through the year, too!
