IDW Entertainment, publisher, content development, production and distribution arm of IDW Media Holdings, has finalised an agreement to develop, finance and produce a new scripted series based on British writer Mike Carey and producer Arvind Ethan David’s comics mini-series Darkness Visible.

The announcement coincides with IDW Publishing’s trade paperback collection release of Darkness Visible and web site Deadline reports IDW will be developing, financing and producing the series.

David will serve as executive producer under the Ideate Media production banner (the company behind Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), as will Carey, Cavan Ash, Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy and IDW Entertainment’s CEO Ted Adams and President David Ozer.

The six-issue miniseries published earlier this year imagines a world where demons and humans live side by side. It is both a supernatural thriller and a commentary on race, immigration, terrorism and politics.

The story starts in World War Two, when demons aid the Allies in destroying the Axis. In return, demons are allowed to live among humans and humanity reluctantly learned to share the world with another sentient race.

Eighty years later, this uneasy co-existence has spawned an endless terrorist conflict. Detective Daniel Aston, charged with being the thin blue line between the two sides, is tested to the limit when a demon sets up house inside his soul. But to save his daughter, he’ll pay any price — including genocide.

Mike Carey‘s work spans comics (including work for Marvel and DC), books, TV and film scripts, and radio plays. His novel The Girl with All the Gifts was an international bestseller, and adapted by Carey for the 2016 Colm McCarthy-directed film. Other books include Fellside, the Felix Castor series, and The Steel Seraglio (with Linda and Louise Carey).

In addition to co-creating Darkness Visible, Arvind Ethan David is one of the writers of IDW’s Dirk Gently comic, as well as being Executive Producer on the show, now screening on BBC America, and heading to Netflix here in the UK soon. He describes his career as making stories “for page, stage and screen” – and helping build and run companies around them.

“I am delighted to be working again with my friends at IDW,”  David told Deadline. “Daniel Aston is a very different sort of detective from Dirk Gently but they have in common: being deeply British, an abiding suspicion of supernatural forces beyond their control, and an unconventional approach to investigation.

“To have a producer of Trevor Macy’s acuity and track-record on board and to be co-writing with Mike Carey, a comic-book legend and an old-school gentleman, make this a very special team working on a very special project.”

Darkness Visible was an opportunity to create a supernatural thriller with a razor-sharp political edge,” explains Carey. “And it’s only become more topical since Arvind and I first dreamed it up. Now, working with professionals who know and care about story, I’m very excited to bring Darkness Visible to the screen and look forward to working with IDW, Intrepid Pictures and my good friends at Ideate Media.”
