S.M.A.S.H. a comic, graphic, and novel talkfest in London announced

London Graphic Novel Network S.M.A.S.H. Event - January 2018

The London Graphic Novel Network have just announced S.M.A.S.H. a comic, graphic, and novel talkfest, taking place on 20th January 2018 at the Artizan Street Library & Community Centre.

Getting philosophical about the art of comics the event, which has a host of speakers, will focus on three subjects over three panels, offering an open discussion between a diverse range of panellists who including Amber Hsu, Inko, Ian Hague,  Paul Gravett and Joe Stone, and their audience.

Here’s the full line-up…

Panel 1: Taking Comics Further @ 2:00pm to 2:45pm (First Floor)

What was your first approach comics after initially after working within another discipline? What are the common threads of craft between your own creative discipline and comics? How do you think comics can elevate the disciplines you work in or vice-versa? Do you think you can reach wider audiences by applying comics to your creative discipline?

What is the appeal of manga in the West? Do you think Western interest in manga increasing? What can manga learn from Western comics to widen their appeal? Does the manga even need more Western interest? How would you describe your experience when trying to talk about manga with readers of Western comics exclusively?

What has been your experience with organising events in an attempt to broaden the audience of potential comics readers? What do people get out of comics events that attempt to bring comics to the public, or show them in a different light? What are the challenges of running public events on comics? What do attendees and participants look for when attending or participating in events based on comics? What is the best way to get people into comics?

Panellists are: Ian Hague (Comics Forum – @drianhague); Sherwin Sacki (London Super Comic Con – @LSComicCon); Rik Jackson (Wimbledon Comic Art Festival – @gojacksongo); Laura Newsome (Shoe Lane Comic Forum – @gojacksongo); and Hannah Chapman (Comic Book Slumber Party – @hannahkchapman)

The day rounds off with Networking between 4.45pm to 5.30pm  (Ground Floor) and a gathering in the Duke of Somerset at 15 Little Somerset St, London E1 8AH until late.

The London Graphic Novel Network CIC aims to connecting creators and fans with comic books and more in London Libraries and beyond.
