First memory of 2000AD?

Hard to say, I think I picked up a copy in a charityshop as a kid in the very early 1980’s and was instantly sucked into Mega City and Nu-Earth and all those other fabulous places with bat-crazy characters and stories.

Favourite Character or Story?

In terms of characters there’s so many to choose from, it’s probably the classic trio of Judge Dredd, Johnny Alpha and Rogue Trooper – though Chopper has a haunting quality about him also.

Story-wise recently I’ve enjoyed Angel Zero by Kek-w and John Burns.

What do you like most about the 2000AD?

It’s British SF that’s consistently good quality and entertaining.

What would you most like to see in 2000AD as it heads to its Forties?

Doing what it continues to do, but also taking risks like when it first started, new writers and artists to keep it fresh.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
