Lest We Forget: Comic Creators We Lost in 2016

Darwyn Cooke

While there’s been much to celebrate in 2016 when it comes to our industry, we couldn’t let the year pass without noting some of those involved now sadly no longer with us, including one of our very own contributors. So raise a glass or two (alcoholic or otherwise) to these fine folk we lost this year… January 2016 Shirley Bellwood British ... Read More »

In Memoriam: Tony Kuroizumi-Luke

I’m very sad to report the passing of comic creator, animator and illustrator Tony Kuroizumi-Luke, who has died after a long battle with cancer – but who, despite often being in pain in recent years, battled it with every fibre of his being and continued to create stunning art and develop new projects. His sister Fran Harris announced the sad news on Facebook ... Read More »

Sapphire & Steel Art Competition Winners – and a New Competition For Our Readers!

Sapphire & Steel by Davey Candlish

Earlier in the year we announced a challenge for downthetubes readers to come up with their interpretation of 1970s spooky ITV show Sapphire & Steeel, after it was revealed that Luther creator and Doctor Who script writer Neil Cross is, hopefully, to re-make the show. Sadly, we didn’t get a huge response to this competition, unlike our Doctor Who and Dan Dare challenges, but Nigel Auchterlounie, Davey Candlish (his art above), Simon Daly and Tony Luke stepped up ... Unexpected Delights from a British Comics Meme

Marvel UK character Digitek, re-imagined by Marc Olivent

So on Monday morning, Christopher Muscat, one of the team who run the highly-regarded Malta Comic Convention, involved me in a comics meme… Which led to some great artists drawing new versions of some wonderful, if obscure, British comic characters. As you’ll see from Christopher’s original public post, the idea of the meme is to fill Facebook feeds with comic book ... Read More »

downthetubes: Our Top All-Time Posts, June 2014

One of the great things about moving downthetubes to a “Content Managed System” last year is that we have a much better idea of what posts are the most popular… not that it’s changed what we post on the site! Just for for fun, here are the Top Five all-time favourite posts on downthetubes… • Beano gets a Top Gear ... Read More »
