Board Supplies

Comic art for the major US companies such as Marvel or DC is drawn on special art board that includes 'blue line' indicators so the artists draw to the correct size proprotional to the final US comic book art size. Artists contracted to the companies are provided with this board, although I am not sure if this is still supplied gratis, as it was in Paul Neary's day as Editorial Director at Marvel UK, or if they have to pay for it.

Page measurements apparently vary slightly from company to company, so using ordinary Bristol board and a ruler may be a better option for the aspiring artist than seeking down this specialised board.

2000AD is now published pro to US comic book size.

BlueLine
There is a type of Bristol board called BlueLine which features these the official comic page measurments printed on it. It's solicited through Previews and, therefore, most comic shops should be able to order it. Some artists don't like it.

Bristol Board
• Most art supply shops in Belfast sell Bristol board in A3 20 sheet blocks.

Hunt Emerson
Official: www.largecow.com

Born in Newcastle on Tyne in 1952, Hunt, who is one of my favourite all-time British cartoonists, says he's drawn cartoons all his life, "although I didn't at first think about doing it seriously." He first moved to Birmingham as a Fine Art student in 1971, but quit college after a year, realising that, whatever else he was, he wasn't an Artist. Undaunted, when he discovered the Underground Press he quickly set about learning how to do comics. "I worked at various jobs in order to allow me to draw at night. I was a postman, a library assistant, I worked in the local prison (doing office work), and eventually found a job at the Polytechnic running a small printing machine. In printing I saw a way that I could link earning a living with doing what I wanted to do; draw comix."
He spent six years working at the Birmingham Arts Lab, becoming part of the group known as Ar-zak publishing British underground comics in the mid 70s. He was also drawing more and more comic strips, which were being published - mostly unpaid - in independent comic books all over the place: in Britain, America, and some in Europe. In 1979 he was able to become a fulltime freelance cartoonist and worked on several magazines including
Melody Maker, Radio Times, Which Bike?, Time Out, Pink and Razzle... "For a while my cartoons were like a rash on the publishing world," he says.
In 1980 or 81 he was offered a "regular gig" by Galaxy Publications drawing
Firkin the Cat, a two-page comic that is still running in Fiesta magazine written by Tym Manley. He also began my association with Fortean Times around then, the leading monthly journal of unexplained phenomena. He's also drawn for The Beano. "Extra work tends to be of a specialist nature - for example, the comic books published by the Ruskin Foundation dealing with the ideas of 19th century artist, writer, critic and political theorist John Ruskin.
Hunt's also well known for his work for British indie publisher Knockabout Comics, formed in 1979 by Tony and Carol Bennett to publish and distribute underground, minority interest comics and books. They printed the wonderful
Calculus Cat (which also featured in Escape magazine0 Max Zillion & Alter Ego, Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Casanova's Last Stand.
He still lives in Birmingham today. "I share a rambling old house with my dear partner Jane and three cats (Moonlight, Ali Umbaye and Mrs. Cat). I run a T'ai Chi class, and I play guitar and sing in a rock and blues band called
The Hound Dogs. I like pottering in the garden, reading about ancient history, seeing friends, and living as quiet a life as possible thankyou very much. Like most cartoonists, I work crazy hours."
