This is the downthetubes “rolling list” of major British and Irish comic events, intended as a quick guide to “What’s On”. Follow the links to event web sites for fuller details.

COVID-19 impacted events in the UK, and internationally, throughout 2020 and continues to do so. We are adding 2021 dates where known. Some postponed events have yet to announce new dates, simply because of continued uncertainty caused by the Pandemic. Those organisations that have announced dates are emphasising they will proceed only subject to restrictions and will be enforcing any social distancing measures still in place.

Most major events plan ahead and commit to their dates, because of upfront organisational costs, as much as eight to six months in advance – for example, paying for international flights and making group accommodation bookings for planned guests.

Because of this, it’s very likely we will see the continued cancellation of events into 2021, so as we always do, please follow the links for the latest information about plans for your preferred events.

Organisers are responding to government guidance that sometimes is decided very late as far as any advance planning is concerned and, in turn, governments are responding to events as they happen, not in six months time.

Responsible event organisers are very conscious of fan concerns about safety and will endeavour to keep them informed.

With Free Comic Book Day postponed, comic creators Neo Edmund and Russell Nohelty hosted an alt free comic day over 1st and 2nd May 2020, filled with free digital books, tons of awesome panels, and great creators. Offering 14 hours of live streaming you can sign up to hear about the next event and watch a replay here.

The main stage panels were live streamed to Russell’s web site, along with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Twitch. Attendees could interact with the panels of guests through the live video stream and comment feed. They asked hundreds of questions that were answered live on the air.

Events around the UK in local comic shops and other venues, promoting independent comic press and micro publishers.

In 2016 an idea born on Twitter led to a series of nationwide events in a matter of weeks. The inaugural Small Press Day – a celebratory event designed to spotlight the possibilities of small press publishing and to introduce its practitioners to the far wider audience they deserve – proved to be a phenomenal success. No less than 25 events championing the small press were held across the UK and Ireland on the same day in July – including shop signings, fairs, panels and workshops – resulting in #SmallPressDay to trend throughout.

Building on this trend, hundreds and hundreds joined in for Small Press Day 2017 and Small Press Day 2018 and met with the next generation of superstar comic creators, zine makers, and DIY micro publishers.

The team everything in place for Comic Con Manchester to take place in July or August 2020, and a huge world exclusive headline guest. They decided to completely postpone Comic Con Manchester to 2021, not wanting to saturate their own market and having three conventions of their own in Manchester in the same venue within two months of each other. The headline guest they have for this event is also more comfortable to appear in 2021 so stay tuned.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, John works as a comics editor, writer, as Creative Consultant on the Dan Dare audio adventures for B7 Media, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Working in British comics publishing for over 30 years, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Star Trek Magazine and Babylon 5 Magazine. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War and “Dan Dare”. He’s the writer of “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz, published on Tapastic; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood for digital comic 100% Biodegradable.
