Dave Gibbons Watchmen art and much more on offer in latest Heritage Auctions

Art by British artists such as Charlie Adlard, Alan Davis, Mark Farmer, Dave Gibbons and Barry Windsor Smith is included in the latest Heritage Auctions, taking place 15th – 17th November in Dallas, Texas. Art by US artists such as Jim Aparo, Jack Kirby and Wally Wood and European creators such as Sanjulian, is also on offer.

Here’s some items we’ve picked out, including art created for some memorable UK published Marvel annuals and a terrific unpublished Micronauts piece by US artist Arthur Adams

Cover art for the Marvel Annual 1975 published by World Distributors in the UK. Adapted from style guide art, fans have generally identified this as a Herb Trimpe, inked by Frank Giacoia, but there is no paperwork to confirm this. Artist David Roach suggests a Ron Wilson/Frank Giacoia pairing.

Arthur Adams Micronauts Unpublished Pin-Up Original Art (Marvel, 1983). A piece that pre-dates his first published comics work, this is a simply stop-you-in-your-tracks show-piece, stuffed full of detail and an obvious love for the subject matter! This pin-up features the looming figure of Baron Karza above the main Micronauts players of Acroyear, Bug, Huntarr, Marionette, Fireflyte, and Arcturus Rann (not to mention a slew of Karza's guards).

Dave Gibbons Watchmen Movie Reference Illustration Original Art (DC/Warner Brothers, 2009). Original Watchmen related art by Dave Gibbons is hard enough to find, but a fantastic grouping of headshots of the six main characters is a real corker of a find! Featuring Rorschach, the Comedian, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, and Nite Owl.

Dave McKean - Sandman Unpublished Painting Original Art (undated). Sandman... Lord Morpheus... Dream of the Endless. This immortal being was the star of Neil Gaiman's smash-hit Sandman. Dave McKean's covers were influential in setting the tone of the book and making it clear that this isn't a cape-and-cowl superhero book... it was a fairy tale for adults.
