In Review: Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol #1

Chronos Commandos Issue 1by Stuart Jennett
Publisher: Titan Comics
Out: Now (all good comic ships and digital outlets)

The Comic: When the Allies and Nazis develop time-diving technology that could see the Second World War derailed by creatures from the Cretaceous, only the Sarge and his band of misfit soldiers can save the future – by saving history! Dinosaurs! Giant crocodiles! Albert Einstein with a machine gun! All that barely scratches the surface of the first issue of this astounding, fully-painted pulp spectacular!

The Review: One of  the first titles from the new Titan Comics imprint (which includes A1 and Numbercruncher), Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol mixes time travel with a hard-nosed soldier dragged from the pages of Battle or Valiant (with a pinch of Sergeant Rock and Nick Fury) and delivers a glorious, fun adventure comic that proves a thoroughly enjoyable opener to this five issue series.

Art-wise, Chronos Commandos is simply gorgeous – rip roaring action, terrific dinosaurs and a machine gun toting doppleganger for Albert Einstein just some of the delights. Stuart Jennett has come a long way since his work on Marvel UK’s Warheads back in the early 1990s, profiting from honing his considerable art skill working in the gaming industry, which gave full rein to his innate talent for concept design.

Story-wise, Chronos Commandos starts as I’m sure it means to go on: a rip-roaring romp of a time travel tale, mixing up ideas from plenty of sources previously explored in SF and comic stories such as Ray Bradbury’s A Sound of Thunder, ‘Flesh’ from 2000AD and more.

Combining monster movies and time travel adventure, this is a fun, leave your brain at the door first outing, although I can’t begin to imagine how complicated Mr Jennett’s storyflow chart got as he developed this enjoyable tale. (It seems to open with at lest some of the end of the story – that’s time travel for you!).

Great to finally see this story Stuart’s been working on for several years finally “out there”.

Other Reviews

Comic Bastards
“This book has a leapfrogging T-Rex and an eyepatch-wearing, time-jumping Nazi hitman named Dieter, for Pete’s sake! And you know what? Because, and not in spite of those reasons, it’s pretty goddamn awesome.”

Comic Spectrum
“Stuart does a fabulous job here on both writing and art, I loved the dialog when the soldiers are moving towards their objective through the jungle… The art is gorgeous, the dinosaurs and landscapes are beautifully rendered, the colors are lush & really ‘pop’.”

Nerd Like You
Chronos Commandos feels like a classic B-Movie premise that was injected with a concentrated dose of testosterone and grit.”

Rob Patey
“It’s a great concept that never gets mired in a Hickmanesque explanations of how. Not that I mind those things, but I know many who get turned off by pseudo-science babble.”

Scoop
“Visually, the issue has a highly compelling, Ken Steacy-esque feel to it, and that made us want to keep turning the page.”
