Rebellion launches “Battle Presents” line with “Operation: Overlord”

Rebellion Publishing is to present the international best-selling French graphic novel series Operation: Overlord for the first time in English – under the banner of Battle, one of the UK’s most cherished comics, the weekly war comic once home to “Charley’s War”, “Darkie’s Mob”, “Johnny Red” and other great strips.

Written by Michaël Le Galli and with fantastic art by Star Wars and Hellblazer artist Davide Fabbri, first published by French publisher Glenat in 2014, part one of the series set in World War Two is being published with this month’s Judge Dredd Megazine (Issue 404), on sale later later this week.

The series is being published under the new “Battle presents…” banner, reviving the name of one of the greatest comics in the 1970s and 80s.

Operation: Overlord, an acclaimed bandee desinee series, tells four extraordinary tales of heroism set during the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6th 1944, and is being reprinted in a series of reprint editions bagged with the Megazine.

Each 48-page issue is a stand-alone story, set in separate locations such as Saint-Mere-Eglise, Merville, and of course Omaha Beach.

Michaël Le Galli discovered Franco-Belgian comic books a a child, such as Tintin, Lucky Luke and Blueberry and, around the age of 10, the works of Hugo Pratt. This shaped him into his career as a script writer, initially working with writer David Chauvel. In 1999, he met artist Emmanuel Michalak, which led to the series Cercles d’Akamoth ( Circles of Akamoth), which launched in 2003. Other credits include the action adventure series WATCH with Luca Erbetta, Batchalo with Arnaud Bétend and the Naragam series with MIKE.

Davide Fabbri has worked mainly for Dark Horse Comics on various Star Wars series, for Dynamite and DC Comics. He worked on Victorian Undead in 2010 written by 2000AD‘s Ian Edginton for Wildstorm, which pitted Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson against a legion of undead zombies andwas nominated for a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards.

Launched in 1975, Battle Picture Weekly was the groundbreaking war comic from IPC that published series such as “Rat Pack”, “Major Eazy”, “Johnny Red”, “El Mestizo” (recently released as a brilliant collection, written by Alan Hebden with art by Carlos Rzquerra), “Fighting Mann”, and the critically-acclaimed World War One epic “Charley’s War” by Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun.

Lauded for its no-nonsense heroes and gritty action, Battle fundamentally altered the comics landscape – readers lapped up its modern sensibilities and no-holds-barred attitude, and it led to the creation of both the ill-fated Action and global industry game-changer 2000AD.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to publish Operation: Overlord under the Battle banner,” says Rebellion graphic novel editor Oliver Pickles, much like the recent Sniper Elite series, and helps bring back the spirit of that classic British war comic title but with a modern sensibility.

“I am really looking forward to bringing Operation: Overlord to an Anglophone audience for the first time. The series has been hugely popular in France, with each book focusing on a different event of the D-Day landings, for instance there is a whole 48-page issue dedicated to the Omaha Beach assault by Easy Company.”
