Happy birthday today to Javier Hernandez, the American comic book creator, comic book instructor and radio host, perhaps best known for El Muerto: The Aztec Zombie, a unique blend of Mexican and Chicano folklore, Aztec mythology and mysticism, and comic book pop culture.
In 2011, he co-founded the Latino Comics Expo, the United States first convention dedicated to spotlighting Latino creators. He teaches comic book workshops throughout Los Angeles in schools and libraries, and, in addition to his comics work, was the Associate Producer of the award-winning El Muerto live-action film adaptation.
The majority of Javier’s works are published through his privately owned imprint, Los Comex, and he’s about to launch a character he describes as “the most flabbergasting character in our 21 year publishing history” – Cochito, El Marranito Muerto.
“What started as a gag in my sketchbook after watching Spider-Ham on the big screen soon took on a life of its own,” says Javier on his Tumblr of his new porcine character. “Then I realised this year is the Chinese Year of the Pig!
“Fate sometimes hands you a marketing bonanza on a silver platter…with an apple in its mouth!”

The character gets his launch on Free Comic Book Day at Nostalgia Comics in San Gabriel, California on Saturday 4th May 2019, where you’ll also be able to view his new solo art show, Muertoverso.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
