First female writer to join Commando’s ranks in over 30 years debuts with “Shadow in the Storm!”

Brand new issues of Commando (Issues 5227 – 5230) are out this Thursday, offering shark-infested seas, French Resistance showdowns and Battle of Britain pilots.

Commando 5229: Action and Adventure: Shadow in the Storm!

The latest stories also include a new story of World War Two Air Transport Auxiliary’s female pilots, written by Georgia Standen Battle, who joins a handful of female writers to have written for the title down the decades.

“The Loner”, published back in 1968, was Mary Feldwick’s first story for Commando - one of the comic’s few female authors until now

Longtime Commando readers will know the work of writers Diana Muriel Garbutt and Mary Feldwick, but Georgia is the first female author to join their ranks since 1984 (and she won’t be the last this year, either, as back in March, Commando Comics revealed both Hailey Austin and Kate Dewar were also writing scripts for the title).

Georgia reveals she’s no stranger to the legacy she is to become a part of.

“I was influenced by Feldwick stories, in particular her use of the supernatural or the unexplained,” she says. “I really wanted to write about the inspirational and often overlooked female pilots in the ATA and their contribution to the war, but with an unexpected twist like Feldwick does in her stories.”

The Commando team have been building their creative team in earnest since last year, and it’s great to see further new names joining the title’s ranks, aiming to expand still further the long-running title’s appeal.

Will they make it back or will they all be sunk?!

Dramatic stuff and an excellent read by Eric Hebden!

You may recognise the Ian Kennedy cover for “Squadron – Scramble!” from the new The Art of Ian Kennedy book, on sale now. Indeed, “Squadron – Scramble!” first came to the current Commando team’s attention when it was selected to be this very reprint.

The team was so enamoured with the cover, they just had to put it in The Art of Ian Kennedy book.
