The May/June Compalcomics catalogue has just launched, offering a host of British comics goodies – both comics and art – for auction, alongside many US comic offerings, too including a copy of Spider-Man‘s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15, signed by Stan Lee.
In all, there are 302 lots in the catalogue, an auction showcases the third part of the Bob Monkhouse Archive collection with original artwork boards of “Thunderbirds” from TV21, Garth from the Mirror and “Dan Dare” from Eagle by Frank Bellamy – and Ron Turner’s splendid re-creation artwork in 1986 of his original Vargo Statten science fiction cover from 1951.
If it’s really good value you’re after, look no further than lot 123, estimated at £40-60. It’s the Beano comic No 3260 from 2005. The original 200,000 copy print run was destroyed as a certain French footballer was lampooned within.
The artwork selection also features front covers of Beano and Dandy by Dudley Watkins and Jimmy Chrichton with three of Joe Colquhoun’s atmospheric boards of “Charley’s War” in an episode for the war comic, Battle, set during the Battle of the Somme.
Key items on offer in this auction are The Beano No 2 and the Dandy No 2, this followed by its rare Jumping Frog free gift in a separate lot (Froggy’s eighty-two – and still jumping).
The first Christmas number of The Beano, No. 21 is also on offer, along with early propaganda war issue complete years. Look out for The Beano bound volume of 1943!
There are 10 complete bound volumes of The Eagle on offer, with an extra copy of No. 1 thrown in, all in the same lot and Compalcomics are delighted to offer some rarities from the Peter Hansen Archive, including Bulldog Brittain Commando, Gallant Adventure, Hal Starr in Strange Worlds, Spaceman, Super-Sonic (featuring art by “Jeff Hawke” co-creator Sydney Jordan) and True Life Adventures.
“Time to move some stuff on,” says Peter. “I’m not getting any younger and this era of original British comic history is not really widely known to most British comic fans. It’s heralded the start of careers such [greats] as Don Lawrence, Ron Embleton, Jim Holdaway, Terry Patrick, Gerry Embleton, and many others.”
“Wild Young Dirky” by Dudley Watkins ran for three complete stories in The Topper between 1954 and 1956 and all 40 pages of the printer’s proofs are offered. Other notable attractions include Jane’s Journal by Norman Pett, Wonderman and Oh Boy!, a fresh copy of Hurricane No 1, the Australian edition of Daredevil No 1 – and a comprehensive run of Super-Detective library including the first issue.
The US section highlights Amazing Fantasy #15, signed to the splash page by Stan Lee and Amazing Spider-Man #1-100. A run of pulps continues in this offer, including Fantastic Adventures, Jungle Stories, Planet Stories and Weird Tales – and look out for Golden Age Action Comics #28 and Superman #13 in mid grades.
