The latest issue of the Dan Dare-inspired comic magazine Spaceship Away (Issue 48) is on sale now, sports a great cover and double-page poster by 2000AD artist John M. Burns.
Burns best-known work on Dan Dare is for a strip for the New Eagle, published between 1990 and 1991, but he was also chosen by writer Denis Gifford to illustrate a revival of the character, “Dan Dare and Son” for Reveille Extra in the 1970s, a page inside the long-running Reveille weekly magazine, which could be cut out and folded into a four-page comic. The project, which would have involved Dan Dare creator Frank Hampson as an advisor, was dropped by IPC management almost as soon as it began, as Alan Vince recounted in an article for Spaceship Away 33.
This issue of Spaceship Away continues the Dan Dare strip “Shakedown Cruise” drawn by Tim Booth and includes two more colour strips, Ron Turner’s “The Golden Amazon” coloured by Martin Baines, and a further episode of “Operation Pintos”.
Features include the second part of a “The Don Harley Story” by downthetubes stalwart Jeremy Briggs, “Pioneers of the Future” by Andrew Darlington a guide to V2 launch sites in France during World War Two and more “Space News” from Ray Wright – plus a free text story, “The Valley of Walking Trees” (Chapters 5 & 6)
• Spaceship Away is available on subscription from the magazine’s official web site at spaceshipaway.org – and individual issues are available from eBay – Issue 48 is on sale here
