Spirit of the Pharaoh graphic novel lays ground for new feature film

Not content with developing To the Death with Geoff Senior and reinventing a host of British classic comic heroes with artist Simon Coleby for Rebellion’s The Vigilant saga, writer Simon Furman has also been busy turning Egyptian mythology on its head, working with Terry Jervis and Stan Berkowitz on the graphic novel Spirit of the Pharaoh, drawn by Chris Geary. The project paves the way for a new feature film based on the story, and other projects, too.

Two warring spirits are loose on the world after a tomb is un-earthed: Seth, the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, and King Ra’Mun, a pharaoh sworn to protect his people and reunite with his long-lost love Queen Neferkari. When Seth forms an unholy alliance with a billionaire arms dealer who wants the secret of ‘after-life’ – an ability to live forever, it is up to Ra-Mun – with the help of a young couple, Raymond and Marie – to defeat the god of chaos once and for all.

A Royal Air Force pilot’s discovery of a tomb starts an amazing adventure across time, in a  classic good versus evil story. The graphic novel, launched earlier this year, is the brainchild of media entrepreneur, film-maker, music and TV producer Terry Jervis, working with Simon and Hollywood writer Stan Berkowitz on the story – and lays out the stall for a much wider multimedia project, aiming to deliver both a TV series and film.

With smashing covers from Alex Ronald, the script for Spirit of the Pharaoh was written by Simon Furman (Transformers, Doctor Who, DreamWorks, Titan and Marvel) with art by Chris Geary. It got a star-studded launch at the British Film Institute earlier this year, an event that included a special appearance by singer Patti Austin. The legendary soul, r&b and jazz artist, god-daughter and vocal arranger of Quincy Jones, Ms. Austin was there to launch her theme song, “Hope Has Arrived” from the music soundtrack of the graphic novel and film, available on various platforms, including Amazon.

Since the graphic novel launch, animation studio M2 Entertainment have signed up for the development of the animation film, which Terry Jervis  told downthetubes will be in the style of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film.

“The live action movie will go into pre-production next year,” he says. “The audience buying the graphic novel can see the production process in the back of the book – and can audition for character voices (for the animation) and acting roles (for the live action). This won’t be until summer 2020.”

As well as the comic story, a novel written by Terry Jervis and Simon Furman is also available, offering plenty of action and adventure. in a story where technology battles ancient magic for control of every soul on Earth.

Published by Jervis Entertainment Media Limited and Titan Books, it’s available direct from the project’s web site.
