We love left field stuff here at downthetubes, and (apart from comics themselves)  you probably can’t get more left field than the news that Kendal’s knitters and crochet enthusiasts are so enthused by the upcoming Lakes International Comic Art Festival, they’re busy creating comic-inspired woollen animals, hats and other clothing to celebrate the event.

That Kendal has a great collection of pasionate knitters should come as no surprize given the town’s history as a major part of Britain’s wool industry dating back to the fourteenth century.

As well as seeing folk wearing cleverly-created cartoon-dog inspired hats, the plan is to feature many of these creations in some of the tie-in window displays many of Kendal’s shops are going to have to mark the event – an idea to include local business in this comics occasion that I’ve seen previously during the world-famous Angouleme Comic Festival in France.

No doubt various examples of this ‘guerilla knitting campaign’ will appear in other places around Kendal during the Festival weekend, – it wouldn’t be the first time.

Jo Collier, one of the peoiple behind this knitting scheme, has put out an appeal for comic-related knitting patterns on Twitter – if you can help, drop her a line.

The knitting an crochet team are already busy at work on characters such as Rupert the Bear and other great stuff. Fantastic fun!

cRAfterChick has posted a number of free to use comics-inspired kniting patterns on her web site; a Snowy the Dog hat crochet pattern is here
