Here are some of Misty comics artist John Armstrong‘s life studies artworks created in the 1940s, currently up for sale on eBay. I’m selling the work on behalf of John’s family, and here is what’s on offer in this first John Armstrong “Life Studies” Sale.
I’ve included some additional “close ups” where there are multiple figures on a page.
These artworks are some of comics artist John Armstrong’s life drawings created Middlesbrough’s Constantine College in the 1940s, where he graduated in Intermediate Arts and Crafts.
British girls comics artist John Armstrong, who was the co-creator of “Bella at the Bar” for Tammy and “Moonchild” for Misty, died aged 94 in 2018 and this is one of his artworks I am selling on behalf of John’s family.
All these artworks measure 15″ x 22″ on cartridge paper and were drawn in the late 1940s, before John began his career as a commercial artist. His work included book covers, book illustration, set design, girls comics, promotional posters for pantomimes and much more.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
