Meet Captain Britain, 2099!

Marvel’s Excalibur returns to comic shop shelves in October, and #2, on sale in November, and on offer will be a variant cover featuring a 2099 version of Captain Britain, part of a crossover event celebrating the “2099” Marvel Universe we first saw back in the 1990s.

Marvel’s return to the year 2099 was teased during July’s San Diego Comic Con but the full solicitations for the event have now been revealed. Mike McKone has provided the alternative cover version of Captain Britain, the 2099 version, tying in with Marvel’s 2099 celebrations, with each Marvel title offering an alternative cover with a new 2099 character.

In the year 2099, the Marvel Universe proves that there will always be a need for heroes. In this dystopian future, society is ruled by corporate entities and it is harder than ever to rise above the status quo.

In Excalibur #2, written by Tini Howard with art by Marcus To, with a regular cover by Mahmud Asrar, on sale 20th November, Betsy Braddock is Captain Britain, but a citizen of Krakoa. With Rogue’s condition a mystery, the team heads to the one place that has always been the seat of Excalibur’s power – the Lighthouse.

Marvel has also revealed the costume designs for this 2099 Captain Britain, some clearly influenced by the original Captain Britain design from the 1970s.

Excalibur #1  sees Brian Braddock hand the role of Captain Britain to his sister, aka Psylocke. As yet, Brian’s role is yet to be confirmed, or whether he also holds the mantle or another or one at all.

It’s not the first time Betsy Braddock has taken on the mantle of Captain Britain, of course. In “It’s Hard to be a Hero”, written and drawn by Alan Davis, published in Captain Britain #13 by Marvel UK back in 1985, Betsy Braddock took up the mantle of Captain Britain, but was blinded by Slaymaster…leading Brian to commit murder!

With some great recent inclusions of Marvel UK characters thanks to Tini Howard, including her take on Death’s Head, in the mainstream Marvel Universe, might we see more revivals in 2020?
