Cornwall’s first comic book convention – the 22 Panels Comic Art Show – will be running from 26-27 October 2013 in the coastal town of Falmouth. Celebrating comics as art in a weekend convention hosted by the town’s independent arts centre, The Poly, with guests, talks, screenings and exhibitions.

Celebrating the comic book medium, the team behind 22 Panels believe that comic art should be given the respect and attention of any art and aims to provide comic artists with a space where their work will be appreciated as art, while also encouraging the public to understand and get involved with the comic book medium.

The focus of the event will be a weekend convention with comics professionals, traders, small press, workshops, talks, screenings and exhibitions. 22 Panels will be making use of all The Poly’s facilities, including a large main gallery and auditorium.

Guests include Benjamin Dickson, who has written short stories for a number of publishers including Heavy Metal Magazine, Self Made Hero and Ctrl Alt Shift, for whom he wrote “Not One Minute of Silence”(Illustrated by Warren Pleece), a true account of police brutality and murder in Colombia. He works part-time as a community artist, working with mental-health service users.

Other announced guests include illustrator, designer, cartoonist and lecturer Dan Berry, who runs the Make It Then Tell Everybody podcast and whose new title, The Suitcase, is out from Blank State Books; Dom Reardon, perhaps best known for 2000 AD horror tale Cabillistics, Inc with Gordon Rennie;  2000 AD stalwarts Henry Flint and Jock, who’s currently working with actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz on an original comic book project; artist John M. Burns, who has been working in comics since the 1950s and whose credits include newspaper strips such as “The Seekers”, the eponymous strip for Countdown in the early 1970s and more recently for for 2000 AD, as well as adapting Jane Eyre for Classcial Comics.

Alsio in the line up for the weekend are John Spelling,  an illustrator and graphic designer whose latest project, Fight The Power, is a collaborative effort with Sean Michael Wilson, Benjamin Dickson, Hunt Emerson and Adam Pasion to produce a visual history of protest in the English-speaking nations; comics artist and illustrator Lee O’Connor, whose work has appeared in “The Power of Five” graphic novels Raven’s Gate andEvil Star from Walker Books and drew the IRAQ graphic novel published by the international humanitarian charity War on Want:  Paul Grist, who’s most famous for his acclaimed crime series Kane and his offbeat superhero Jack Staff; experienced illustrator and educator in comics and book illustration, Ron Tiner, whose books on art include Figure Drawing Without a Model, Drawing from the Imagination and The Encyclopedia of Fantasy & Science Fiction Art Techniques; and Tiernen Trevallion, who is well-known for the 2000AD supernatural thriller Absalom with writer Gordon Rennie. His intricate art has quickly attracted a large following, with fans excited about his upcoming book with Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby, Robbie Burns, Witch Hunter, coming soon from Renegade Arts.
