Cartoon Museum hosts Comics Laureate Round Table this Wednesday

Comics Laureates Three - Dave Gibbons, Charlie Adlard and Hannah BerryLondon’s Cartoon Museum hosts a Comics Laureate Round Table this Wednesday (13th November 2019), with Dave Gibbons, Charlie Adlard and Hannah Berry.

This is a rare opportunity to see all three Comic Laureates on stage at the same time, including the current holder of the position, Hannah Berry.

What does a Laureate do? Is it an honour to be asked? What is it like to wear a cape? The three comic creators will be talking about all this, and more for a talk hosted by Jason Atomic.

The ticket includes a chance to look round the gallery and check out the in focus display on the three Laureates, which includes the last five pages of The Walking Dead drawn by Charlie Adlard.

The first Comics Laureate, Comic Artist and Writer Dave Gibbons past projects include Watchmen, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Batman, Captain America, and more. He’s also co-creator of Give Me Liberty and Martha Washington Goes to War with Frank Miller.

Charlie Adlard is perhaps best known for his work on the now completed The Walking Dead, and recently released LIFE, a new hardcover collection of art from Charlie attending life art evenings at Hive Shrewsbury using various techniques, published by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival and available from Festival partner Page 45.

Current Comic Laureate Hannah Berry is a comics creator, writer, illustrator and podcaster and author of the horrifyingly-prescient media satire, Livestock, published by Jonathan Cape.

Sponsored by Lancaster University, the Comics Laureate is an ambassadorial and educational role for the comic genre and aims to raise awareness of the impact comics can have in terms of increasing literacy and creativity. The Comics Laureate appointment is made biennially to a distinguished comics creator, writer or artist in recognition of their outstanding achievement in the genre.

Working closely with the Lakes International Comics Art Festival, the Comics Laureate champions the role of comics in improving literacy through a programme of educational visits, workshop events, guest appearances and conferences. A key focus will be working to increase the acceptance of comics as a creative art form in schools, libraries and throughout the education system.
