TV, Film-inspired classic comics and a Spider-Man “Bop Bag” among latest Phil-Comics auction goodies this month

With over 600 vintage comic listings, from the 1920s through to the 2000s, there’s something for most collectors in the latest Phil-Comics eBay auction this week; comics, annuals, holiday specials, books, free gifts, poster magazines, picture libraries and more.

While there’s the usual mix of classic comics, including Beano, Dandy, Buster Specials, Wham! and more on offer, there are also a number of TV and film inspired rarities on offer, including an early Marvel UK Star Wars Special, published in 1977, and an near equally Marvel US Star Wars “Treasury Edition” Collection reprinting early strips in a large format edition.

There are some great lots of the 1970s Gerry Anderson TV series dominated Countdown comic, too, and a number of sticker albums and more, too.

Battle Picture Weekly comic Issue 1 - cover dated 8th March 1975

Along with an opportunity to get your hands on the first ever issue of Battle Picture Weekly, this auction also features copies of Marvel UK’s foray into war comics, Fury, the first issue featuring a cover by Dave Gibbons. Also on offer is an copy of Issue Three of the title, complete with free gift – a stunning D-Day poster featuring art by legendary aviation artist Frank Wooton.

The art, which is actually printed quite dark in comparison with later prints and other uses, such as the cover of Norman Frank’s 2003 book, Typhoons Attack, is an imaginary scene of retreating German army units being attacked by British fighter-bombers in the aftermath of the Allied invasion of northern France in 1944.

A full run of the comic is offered, over three lots.

Along with US comics, there’s a very rare Spider-Man “Bop Bag” on offer – an original 1979 boxed merchandise item. Similar “bouncing balloons” were advertised for sale in 1970s UK Marvel comics, but this item, produced in Taiwan seems hard to find.
