The Limited Edition release of the much-anticipated Masters of British Comic Art, featuring a cover by author and 2000AD artist David Roach, is now on offer on the Treasury of British Comics web shop.

There are only 200 copies of this limited edition webshop variant hardback for sale.

Offering a fascinating study and celebration of the British comics industry – one of few books to take on such a difficult challenge – Masters of British Comic Art offers a simply glorious journey through time, detailing the often surprising and fascinating evolution British comic art, from its humble beginnings in the 19th century through to its current world-conquering status.

The book features a Who’s Who of talent, including Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons, Yvonne Hutton, alongside celebrated greats such as Don Lawrence and lost masters like Reg Bunn and Shirley Bellwood.

“Since Brian Bolland drew the cover to the regular edition, we thought it might be nice if my cover was, in turn, a tribute to one of his legendary illustrations,” says David of his fabulous Limited Edition art, “a very memorable advert for Forbidden Planet way back in the 1970s.

“His starred all manner of American heroes crowded round Superman, but fittingly my version is filled with as many British characters as I could squeeze in.

“It’s chock full of obscure comic strips and references and if anyone can spot them all. I’ll be amazed.”

“I’m so looking forward to the book finally coming out,” David says, “and there’ll be a big signing to launch it, details soon…”

Born in Cardiff in 1965, where he still lives and works, sharing a house “with more books, comics and magazines than is entirely sensible’, David Roach was consumed with both a passion for drawing and writing and a deep seated love of comic books and from an early age. After studying fine art and Philosophy in Art College he started to work at the age of 21 on the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, 2000AD where his credits include drawing “Judge Anderson” and “Nemesis The Warlock”.

Masters of Comic Book ArtWith American comics welcoming British creators in the 1990s he drew and inked numerous series for DC (Batman, Star Trek), Dark Horse (Aliens, Star Wars) Topps (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) and Dynamite (Vampirella). David has also provided illustrations for advertising and games for many years, including the popular Dungeons and Dragons series.

As a writer, he has contributed to numerous art and comic magazines and is the author or co-author of 16 books, including The Warren Companion (Twomorrows, with Jon B. Cooke), Aarrgghh!! It’s War (Carlton), Lifestyle Illustrations of the 50s (Fiell, with Rian Hughes), The Art of Jose Gonzalez, Masters of Spanish Comic Book Art and the Art of Vampirella (all for Dynamite).

He recently worked on Stan Lee’s How to Draw Comics masterclass (Watson – Guptil), released last year, ahead of Masters of British Comic Art, his seventeenth book.

In recent years David has diversified into storyboards and games working on the Warhammer movie, the Vinci’s Demons TV series and the Doctor Who Infinity computer game. Recent art credits include  work on the Doctor Who comic strip for Panini UK, along with “Judge Dredd” and “Judge Anderson” for 2000AD – and a mountain of commissions for fans.

In parallel with his comics career David also works in fine art and has seen his work exhibited. He has curated and participated in group exhibitions in the UK and Poland, has been a keynote speaker at academic conferences.
