Free Comic Creator-focused workshops announced for LICAF LIVE

Seven free exclusive workshops with leading international creators, including Steven Appleby, Joe Kelly, Luke McGarry and Lucy Sullivan are part of the line-up of LICAF LIVE, this year’s virtual version of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival next month, aimed specifically at comic creators new and old, suitable for age 15+.

• How to Draw from Observation with Lucy Sullivan – Saturday 10th October 2020, 11.00am | Register here

Lucy Sullivan, creator of the graphic novel BARKING, will show you a variety of techniques and how to apply them to your art practice and improve your skills at drawing from observation. Participants will be drawing along with Lucy as they tackle perspective, foreshortening and capturing real life.

• How to be a Cintiq Maestro with Jason Chatfield – Saturday 10th October 2020, 3.00pm | Register here

From the drawing board to the drawing tablet. A merging of traditional and digital drawing techniques using the latest in creative technology from Wacom. New Yorker cartoonist and President of the National Cartoonists Society, Jason Chatfield gives a behind the scenes tutorial of his hybrid process of comic creation.

• How to Write for Comics with Joe Kelly – Saturday 10th October 2020, 5.00pm | Register Here

Join Spider-Man and I Kill Giants writer Joe Kelly for an overview into his writing process for comics. Joe will focus on the engines of serialised storytelling: Motivation, Theme, & Cast Building – with a dash of the more granular elements such as panel count, ATP (across the page), and collaboration with an artist.

• How to Think with Steven Appleby – Sunday, 11th October 2020 12 noon | Register Here

Imaginary Worlds… Steven Appleby follows the thread of reality and lived experience that runs through all his ideas, writing, comic strips and creative work – however surreal – culminating in his latest book, the graphic thriller Dragman. He explores – with exercises and thought experiments – where ideas come from; creating characters; creating imaginary worlds… and bringing them to life by underpinning them with real lived experience so that they feel – and become – ‘true’.

Ever dreamt of publishing your own comic? From new creators releasing their first comic, through to comic A-listers, more and more people are turning to crowdfunding. Tom Ward (co-creator of Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman), and Ben Cullis (The77), share how they approach their successful crowdfunding campaigns and answer all your questions.

• How to Draw Caricatures with Tom Richmond – Sunday, 11th October 2020, 4.00pm | Register Here

Join “The Mad Art of Caricature” author and longtime MAD Magazine artist Tom Richmond as he demonstrates the fundamentals of exaggerating and capturing the likeness of a subject. You’ll draw along with Tom as he breaks down the process of creating a successful caricature.

• How to Animate DIY Style with Joe & Luke McGarry – Sunday, 11th October 2020, 6.00pm | Register Here

With a client list that spans the spectrum from music videos, TV series and animated commercials, brothers Luke and Joe McGarry, operating as Fantastic Heat Brothers, are one of the most in-demand indie animation creators working today. In our exclusive workshop, they’ll share their insider tips on how to create professional quality animation on a home computer, add special effects, sound effects, and record your own soundtrack.
