The last issue of Eagle Times for 2020 is still available from the Eagle Society, this belated plug the result of delayed receipt of visuals – my copy was one of a batch of copies victim to a strange postage accident involving what seems to have been a giant pot of glue! (I blame The Mekon…)
Featuring articles on “Riders of the Range”, Christmas in EAGLE and the recent EAGLE Exhibition at the Atkinson Gallery in Southport, it runs to 54 pages.
Despite the unfortunate delay receiving the issue, it was worth the wait, and not just for the COVID-19 comment from Dan Dare. downthetubes contributors Jeremy Briggs and Steve Winders provide two terrific articles. Jeremy writes on the Pay Rates for the Christmas 1958 issue of EAGLE’s companion paper Girl, which is an illuminating read, not least the fact that the creators were paid in guineas.
Meanwhile, Steve providing an excellent second article on Frank Hampson and Norman Williams‘ “Great Adventurer” strip about St. Paul, written by Chad Varah.
After reading David Britton‘s article on the latest Dan Dare exhibition at The Atkinson in Southport, I wish I’d been able to get there, too. Fingers crossed for the next one – when that happens!
