New “illustrators” projects from Book Palace spotlight Edgar Rice Burroughs, Peter Jackson, Jesús Blasco, and more

Book Palace has announced three new titles, including a number of illustrators Specials spotlighting the work of top comic artists.

Illustration Art Gallery presents Through the Ages: Drawings and Paintings by Peter Jackson

Illustration Art Gallery presents Through the Ages: Drawings and Paintings by Peter Jackson is a limited edition release, out in July, presenting a major collection of Peter Jackson’s stunning historical art.

Peter Jackson was a master of historical illustration, second to none in his ability to bring any period to life. His wonderful “London Scrapbooks”, drawn for the Evening News from the 1940s onwards, some of which were collected in two memorable volumes, London Explorer and London is Stranger Than Fiction, are legendary. Jackson began his career adapting classics into comic strips for newspapers in the late 1940s. This led to his long association with the Evening News. His collection of maps, prints and artefacts from all ages of London formed the basis of a number of books, including London: 2000 Years of a City and Its People, The History of London in Maps and Walks in Old London.

Most active during the 1960s – 1980s, Peter used his superb artistry and wonderful imagination to depict a variety of historic events and characters, including the Ancients, Roman and Greek History, Medieval, Tudor and Victorian times, and beyond, taking us well into 20th Century Life.

Much of his working life was taken up with historical reconstructions, etc., and his work for Look and Learn, Express Weekly, Swift, Mickey Mouse Weekly and Eagle confirm that he could have been an even greater asset to the Thriller Comics Library.

The new book includes an introduction to Peter Jackson’s art and career, including the techniques he employed to create these delightful images, scanned directly from the originals.

The Art of Glamour: A Pictorial History of the Pin-Up
Not Final Cover

Also from Book Palace, out in August, alongside the current issue of illustrators, (Issue 33, details here), is the next illustrators Special, The Art of Glamour: A Pictorial History of the Pin-Up.

More details will be published soon, but as with other titles in this series, expect it to feature plenty of fabulous artwork, much of the art taken from scans of the original work.

More like a book than a magazine, illustrators is the art quarterly devoted to the finest illustration art ever published. It guides you through the stories behind the artists and their art, with features written by some of the leading authorities on this important art form.

As well as building into an indispensable reference library, illustrators gives readers an insight into the creative process, from idea to sketch to painting, and from painting to the image seen by millions.

illustrators Special - Edgar Rice Burroughs

Another upcoming illustrators Special is Edgar Rice Burroughs, showcasing some of the greatest art ever to grace the works of the author who created Tarzan, published from around the world in comics, books, magazines, posters and films.

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ mighty Tarzan springs out of the page in this newest illustrators Special, featuring an interview by Bill Stout with the amazing artist Joe Jusko, who shares some of the most spectacular Tarzan art ever seen and reveals how and why these paintings came about.

This epic issue also features John Watkiss and his inspirational art for Disney’s 1993 animated classic Tarzan. A reminiscent Bill Stout recalls his days working as Russ Manning’s assistant; and the Special also explores the life and work of legendary Tarzan artist and founder of the New York School of Visual Arts, Burne Hogarth.

As well as building into an indispensable reference library, illustrators gives readers an insight into the creative process, from the initial idea to the image potentially seen by millions.

Illustrators Issue 34

Book Palace next regular issue of illustrators (Issue 34) investigates the careers of Spanish artists Jesús Blasco and Solano López, who were integral to the success of various British boys comics in the 1960s and 70s.

This is followed by Issue 35, its attention on artists that include one of the greatest comic strip artists of all time, Alex Raymond, plus the multi-talented Bob Eggleton and his monsters, aliens and nocturnal frighteners!

A very advance heads up, too, that the Book Palace team are beavering away on their first illustrators Special for 2022 – Warren – The US Artists.

This issue will explore and showcase the art of Warren magazines’ US Artists, the iconic series of horror comics published by James Warren and featuring many big-name American artists including Ken Kelly, Richard Corben, Bernie Wrightson, Neal Adams, Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Kenneth Smith, Frank Frazetta, Wallace Wood, John Severin, Reed Crandall, Carmine Infantino and Louise Simonson.
