Episode #128 of Doctor Who: Panel to Panel is live, featuring an interview with former Doctor Who Magazine editor Gary Gillatt.
Giving his first ever podcast interview, Gary, now Deputy editor on Inside Soap magazine, talks about becoming a fan, his tenure as DWM editor between 1995 and 2000, his thoughts on the new series and more.
Along the way, Gary reveals how Doctor Who was part of his life from an early age growing up in Blackpool, the theme music from the show wafting into his street from the well-known exhibition in the town, that memory buoyed by its owner living on his street and driving “Bessie” home from work.
Gary’s also enthusiastic about the comic strip in Doctor Who Magazine – sadly still absent from the title, with no news on when it might return – talking about the title’s early strips, and how he felt it should be treated. It’s a fantastic, opinionated, but fascinating chat and well worth a listen.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
