Crowdfunding Spotlight: Miss Medusa’s Monstrous Menagerie

Independent American comics publisher Unlikely Heroes Studios has just launched a crowdfunder for its latest project, Miss Medusa’s Monstrous Menagerie.

It’s a fantastic-looking historical fantasy adventure by writer, background artist, and colourist Paul Hanley (Doctor Who, The Unthinkables), character artist Matt Frank (Godzilla, Transformers, Power Rangers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and letterer Matt Krotzer (Dark Horse, Image, Zenoscope) on a zany, colourful, darker-than-expected adventure into 1960s carnival life.

Paul very kindly gave downthetubes a sneak peek of the near-complete first issue, and it’s beautiful work, art wise, and establishes out the setting in style. Not just introducing the principal characters, who you definitely want to know more about once you’ve met them, but I can see some carefully- seeded visual hints in the story of things to come!

The team behind the project tell me they will be offering reasonable shipping to the UK and EU thanks to a fulfillment person they are working with on this side of the Atlantic.

Mistress in the ring, snake in the grass – she’ll do anything to get that ca$h.

It’s 1963, and having a carnival of 666 monsters ain’t the draw it used to be. Miss Medusa’s Monstrous Menagerie is one of the last two Mythic shows left in the United States, trucking from one backwater jerkass town to the next. It’s dirty work, and sometimes you barely make the nut, but America’s still the land of plenty (of rubes). For this season at least, Miss Medusa’s hiring, and you can still run away and join the circus. (Mythics, Cryptids, Gods, and Atomics only, please. Humans need not apply).

The initial goal of the Kickstarter is to raise funds to print Miss Medusa’s Monstrous Menagerie #1, get it into your hands, and produce a small pile of really cool bonus merchandise for fans!

“We are ultimately aiming, however, to raise more money and use any stretch goal profits towards production of future comic issues and amazing bonus rewards,” the team say. “The stretch goals will only get better as we go, so stay tuned during the campaign for surprises and bonus gifts!”

Unlikely Heroes Studios is an independent comic book company with a team spread out all over America. Creating, printing, and publishing high-quality comics, the team also includes Laurie Foster (Inker/Editor), who’s has been drawing for more than 15 years and professionally inking for eight. She is also a graphic designer, editor, and cosplayer! She’s done work for Valiant Entertainment, Kymera Press, and many others.

Erek Foster (Swiss Army Knife) is a professional letterer, photographer and musician and has helped the UHS team with books, video projects, sound design, and Kickstarter campaigns.

“Early pledges will help us have the strongest possible launch,” they tell us. “We’d love to hit goal within the first 48 hours, and as such we’re offering a unique Miss Medusa sticker to anyone who backs at a shipped tier on Day One or Two and comments on the campaign.”

The book looks amazing… and it’s no surprise the project quickly smashed its initial target. Do go give it a look.
