Set in Ancient Greece, an 18-year-old farmhand and his twin sister embark on an epic adventure to protect their mother, and all they know and love, from Hera, the vengeful queen of the gods.  Apollo is a graphic novel of classic Greek mythology, uniquely re-imagined within the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos universe.

Erik von Wodtke is a writer and producer at Edge of L.A. Productions, living in Los Angeles who has worked with Apollo artist Douglas A. Sirois on a number of development proposals and content for all kinds of clients around the globe. “We work with producers, writers, directors, and executives to develop their content for film and television,” he explains. “Our services include story and screenplay development as well as conceptual illustration, poster development, and storyboards.”

“Apollo has always been my favourite of the Greek gods,” he says of the new book – one of a number of comic projects he’s devleoped, which include a Steampunk epic adventure, Doc Holliday the Galactic Gunslinger. “His story is fun, dramatic, and becomes more interesting when you get into reading things like The Iliad and The Odyssey.

“After years of researching Greek mythology and reading stories about Apollo, I became inspired to compose my own re-imagined version of the legend, which pulls the narrative together as if it were a storybook for a larger-than-life feature motion picture.”

Artist Douglas A. Sirois is a painter and illustrator, art director (for Edge of L.A. Productions) and an educator. He mostly work in the entertainment world developing graphic novels, illustrated books, and concept art for film. He graduated from the Art Institute of Boston in 2001 earning a BFA in illustration. In 2009, he followed that with a Master of Fine Arts degree in illustration from CalState, Fullerton in California. After relocating back to New England after ten years living in southern California, he teaches illustration classes in and around New England.

“I found my passion for sequential artwork through the pages of Daredevil comic books written and illustrated by Frank Miller,” says Doug. “I wholeheartedly embraced each issue. It was my first exposure to more mature subject matter aided by the use of contrasting shapes of shadows and lights that is prevalent in old film noir movies that gave the comic book a sense of moody realism. Story after story forever branded my mind with the fantastic and astonishing ideas and images.

“When Erik approached me about Apollo, I had just come off working on a mythological graphic novel, entitled Hercules: The Knives Of Kush (Hercules published by Radical Publishing.”

(Hercules was written by Britain’s Steve Moore, perhaps best known to comics fans for creating Abslom Daak – Dalek Killer and his work for Warrior and 2000AD, including Red Fang with Steve Yeowell. Moore, whose novels include Somnium and has been a regular contributor to Fortean Times magazine for many years, has said Hercules is his final comics work for now, although he is still writing in other areas).

“I was excited that I could take a new approach to another Greek mythological hero and tell it in a way that was both haunting and beautiful,” Douglas continues. “That, in its essence, is the motivation for the art in this book. With almost every page as a double page spread, I can really invest some time making each painting as epic as possible.
