Graphic Brighton celebrates the town’s many comic links

Graphic Brighton

Graphic Brighton, which takes place on Saturday 24th May, will celebrate the comic community in Brighton with talks, one to one surgeries, Q and A’s, interactive presentations and hands-on workshops. Guests include local creators Hannah Berry, Paul Collicutt, Lawrence ElwickJohn Higgins, David Lloyd, Tim PilcherChris Riddell, Nicola Streeten and many more.

Nye Wright will hosts an illustrated talk exploring some of his work, including his graphic novel Things to Do in a Retirement Home Trailer Park, while Dan Locke will reflect on a project with St. Martins Tours, a comic made as a result of an artist’s residency at a housing association in London.

John Higgins, a 2000AD alumnus, a renowned colourist (with work on Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke) presents a talk around his own writings and, in particular, his SF / horror series RazorJack; while Paul Collicutt, known for his works The Murder Mile (published by SelfMadeHero) and Robot City, will be conducting one-to-one sessions with anyone interested in having him look at and comment on their work. (If you would like to have Paul look at your work, please email Sarah Hutchings of QueenSpark Press (sjhutchings@gmail.com) before 24th May 2014 to book a session)

The ever excellent Alex Fitch, who runs the Panel Borders radio show, will also be talking to the award winning illustrator Chris Riddell, about his parallel careers as a children’s illustrator and political cartoonist.

But these events are just the too of the iceberg – check the link below for more information on all the speakers. And, of course, I would expect there will be an opportunity to buy copies of BRIGHTON: The Graphic Novel, edited by Tim Pilcher, which was published last year by community publisher QueenSpark Books last year. The anthology, which was funded through Kickstarter, includes a foreword by Bryan Talbotand includes contributions from Jim Holland, Rosanna Lowe, Rob Simpson, Tom Johnstone , Glenn Stevens, Ottilie Hainsworth and many others.
