Free Karrie Fransman And Amruta Patil Event In Dundee

On Friday 27 June 2014 as part of the Culture 2014 tie-in with the Commonwealth Games, Scottish PEN and Literary Dundee are holding a graphic novel panel talk featuring Karrie Fransman and Amruta Patil to be chaired by Peggy Hughes. In the talk entitled “Reinterpreting Women’s Stories using the Surreal and the Mythological”, the two creators will explore the mythological and fantastic aspects of their work and how they’ve used comics to tell stories from a woman’s point of view. All audience members will receive a piece of artwork from the artists.

The event will take place between 6pm and 7pm at the McManus Café in the McManus Galleries in Dundee’s Albert Square opposite DC Thomson’s Courier Building. It is free but ticketed and tickets can be booked in advance at – www.scottishpendundeeevent.brownpapertickets.com

A writer and painter, Amruta Patil is the author of Kari and Adi Parva and her graphic short stories have appeared in anthologies and magazines around the world. Adi Parva is based on the Mahabharat and the tradition of oral storytellers. She is currently working on Adi Parva’s sequel, Sauptik Parva. Recurring themes in her work include memento mori, sexuality, myth, sustainable living, and the unbroken thread of stories passed down from storyteller to storyteller through the ages.

Karrie Fransman is a comic creator whose graphic novel The House That Groaned is published by Random House’s Square Peg. She has created comics for The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, The New Statesman, Time Out and Psychologies Magazine and also makes comic apps and sculptures while her work has been exhibited in London, Belgium and Russia. Born in Edinburgh, Karrie now lives in London where she runs projects at the London Print Studio and House of Illustration.

This event is part of Scottish PEN’s series uniting Commonwealth and Scottish writers.
