British Comic Shop Releases (17th December 2014) – Prog 2015, Titan’s new Madefire titles – and Neil Gaiman, too

Dredd: Uprise 2

Here’s this week’s list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops tomorrow, Wednesday 17th December 2014, courtesy of First Age Comics, Lancaster. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of, including cover artists.

It’s a busy week for fans of 2000AD, with not only Prog 2015 on sale but Judge Dredd Megazine 354, plus a slew of collections, including Judge Dredd: The Daily DreddsAge of the Wolf and Stickleback: The Number of the Beast. The folk at Rebellion are clearly hoping for some last minute stocking filler buys!

Shadow Show 1 - Cover

Shadow Show launched last month from IDW – featuring gorgeous re-tellings of Ray Bradbury stories.

Titan Comics are busy, too, with the release of numerous Madefire titles as physical editions, including Captain Stone by Liam Sharp and Christina McCormack, which we previewed here.

One title that I missed completely last month was IDW‘s wonderful-looking Shadow Show, in which acclaimed writers come together to pay tribute to the work of the one and only Ray Bradbury, the brilliant who wrote the likes of Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man and Dandelion Wine. The second issue of this limited series featuring a story by Neil Gaiman is on sale this month.

“The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury,” written by Neil with art by Maria Fröhlich, peers into the mind of a man who sifts through his own memories in an attempt to recover the name of a famous sci-fi author.

Also in the issue is “Backward in Seville,” which brings together the singular talents of Audrey Niffenegger and Eddie Campbell to tell a small tale of a woman’s regrets and the new life that awaits her.

I’d thoroughly recommend trying to track down Shadow Show 1 if you missed it, which features “By The Silver Water of Lake Champlain” written by Joe Hill and adapted by Jason Ciaramella (The Cape) and Charles Paul Wilson III (Wraith).

In this haunting story, Gail and Joel, two young teens, form an unlikely bond over the discovery of a lifetime. But their lives will soon be changed, forever altered by what they found that foggy day by the silver waters of Lake Champlain?

Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano and Commando, with great strips featuring in titles such as Judge Dredd MegazineDoctor Who MagazineDoctor Who AdventuresTOXICVIZ and more.
