Imaginings: How The Twelfth Doctor Got His Costume

Doctor Who Magazine 484

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Issue 484, is on sale now in the UK. Along with its usual mix of news and features – and a fun one part comic strip involving a hungry tentacled beast muscling in on a sight unseen auction in space – series producer and writer Steven Moffatt is asked how the Twelfth Doctor got his costume.

Mr Moffatt has, of course, an inventive answer… and you should pick up a copy of the Magazine, which also features a massive interview with the man, to find out what it is. (And also to try and spot the Simpsons reference in the comic strip). But he isn’t alone in coming up with an answer, as you’ll see below in an inventive two-page strip, “The Doctor’s New Clothes”, written by Eoin McAuley and drawn by aspiring comic artist and established fine artist Osin Roche.

The strip isn’t Osin’s first foray into comics, of course – he’s one of several talented folk working for the independent Dublin-based comic publisher Lightning Strikes, founded by Eoin back in 2011.

Oisin says his illustration work is based on the study of nature based on a classical foundation of drawing and composition. His skillful use of the expressive possibilities of oil paint such as impasto, chiaroscuro, and glazing – techniques he perfected from intensive study of the old masters – gives his paintings a lasting character.

Oisin’s paintings have been shown internationally, his last showing being at the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery London with his portrait of journalist and author John Waters.

My thanks to Osin for permission to feature his Doctor Who pages on DownTheTubes. I hope you enjoy the story.
