Thunderbirds Roleplaying project announced as Modiphius game Kickstarter smashes £155,000 stretch goal

Thunderbirds Co-operative Board Game

The stunning success for Modiphius Entertainment‘s Thunderbirds Co-Operative Board Game Kickstarter – backed by fans to the tune of £158,955 so far, well in excess of its £20,000 goal – has resulted in a surprise announcement at the company’s £155,000 “stretchgoal”.

Set in the year 2065, Thunderbirds follows the exploits of International Rescue: a secret organisation committed to saving human life, secretly founded and funded by the millionaire Tracy family. International Rescue has a host of technologically advanced land-, sea-, air-, and space-rescue vehicles and equipment ready to launch at a moment’s notice.

Thunderbirds, the original show on which this game is based, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, was first broadcast in the 1960s, and a new version of the classic show Thunderbirds Are Go, will debut in April on ITV.

To bring the ultimate Thunderbirds experience to the tabletop, Modiphius has partnered with Matt “Brains” Leacock, designer of the hit games PandemicForbidden Desert, and Forbidden Island.  The company has been designing the game since the Spring 2014, with sculpts and graphic design for all the components and after extensive playtesting the game is almost ready to go into production.

The game features detailed plastic models of the iconic Thunderbirds machines and a high octane world full of disasters for players to come to the rescue – detailed items that alone have attracted enthusiasm from backers.

The Kickstarter aimed to raise funds to pay for the print run and to help cover the cost of the expensive plastics tooling for the cool ships and characters in the box and the successful fund raiser means the game will go into production in April.

The huge funding response has meant the company has not only gained funding to produce the game, but also expand it thanks to further funding that has now funded “stretch goals” – funding targets set by the project creator beyond the original Kickstarter goal.

Thunderbirds Roleplaying

“Not only did we unlock the cool models for the ‘Play The Hood 5 Player Expansion’ but we announced Thunderbirds Roleplaying,” says Chris Birch, founder and Publisher of Modiphius, after the Kickstarter breached the £155,000 mark.

Thunderbirds Roleplaying lets you turn the base Thunderbirds board game into an exciting story telling experience,” he explains. “By introducing a Game Master, exciting events and challenges as well as more detailed character progression, Thunderbirds Roleplaying turns the cards, playing pieces, and map of the Core Box into thrilling rescue adventures in a persistent campaign world.

“You can game through much more involved missions of International Rescue that encourage ingenuity and improvisation where the Game Master rewards clever solutions while introducing a balanced array of obstacles, dangers and villains,” he reveals, or “play as the characters from classic Thunderbirds series in a game suited to experienced and novice role-players alike. ”

To put together Thunderbirds Roleplaying, Modiphius have assembled an all-star team including Timothy Brown, whose credits include Dark Sun D&D, 2300AD, Megatraveller and Space 1889; and Cam Banks, whose credits include Marvel Heroic, Leverage, and Firefly The Roleplaying Game.

“Now we are working towards unlocking the final part of the 5 Player Expansion which allows one player to act as the villainous Hood versus International Rescue,” says Chris.

If the Kickstarter reaches higher levels of funding, further stretchgoals will be reached, including more Thunderbird 2 Pod vehicles, with a £220,000 target yet to be revealed.

• The Thunderbirds the Co-operative Board Game will ship in August 2015 and be released in retail in September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the cult TV show.
