Here’s our guide to new comics and graphic on sale in British comic shops today (Wednesday 27th May 2015), complementing our monthly list of new British graphic novels and comic collections (May 2015 list here).
This week sees the release of Providence #1 from Avatar Press by Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows. In what’s described as his most carefully considered work in decades, Moore deconstructs all of Lovecraft’s concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history. Both sequel and prequel to Moore’s Neonomicon, Providence begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of Lovecraft flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America.
“Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience,” Avatar’s press team enthuse. “The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison it to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of horror.”
The whole painstakingly researched project has already been written even before launch and Alan has designed each variant cover to the book and the no-ads comic is described as “his most fully-realized vision to date.” Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages.
Today also sees the release of Titan Comics Surface Tension #1 by Jay Gunn, described by Pat Mills as “A story for our times, written and drawn with passion”. It’s a great read, I think – check out our review here.
This week also sees the release of the new Diamond Previews June catalogue (Issue 321) trailing items on sale in August and beyond for pre-order.
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
