Here’s this week’s list of comics on sale now in comic shops across the UK. As usual, our list highlights the work of British creators and publishers. You may also be already thinking about Christmas (some people do, advertisers, mainly), so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are invading bookshops at a steady pace right now.
On sale from Dark Horse Comics this week is the first issue of Paul Cornell’s This Damned Band, with art by Tony Parker. Set in 1972, the world’s most famous rock band thought they were “worshiping Satan,” only to find they were actually… worshiping Satan. The book’s described as a darkly hilarious adventure of black magic and classic rock.
“It’s been a really long road to bring this one to market, but I’m delighted we finally got here,” says Paul, “We’re getting some excellent reviews, making Comicosity’s Hot Five, IGN’s 7 Hot Comics and Comic Alliance’s Best Comic Books Ever (This Week).
“I’m very pleased with this long interview I did for Paste Magazine, which includes a Spotify playlist of tracks that influenced the comic.”
Over at Titan Comics, they’ve gone nots – Peanuts, that is. Three volumes of their facsimile collections of Charles M. Schulz charming strip cartoons first published between 1952 and 1957 hit the shelves this week – and very nice they look, too.
A quick heads up that next week sees the release of the Zenith: Apex Edition – a full size reproduction from 2000AD publishers Rebellion of the original artwork from Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell’s seminal superhero story from the late 1980s. Carefully hidden away by Yeowell for almost 30 years and curated by 2000 AD’s design team, the Apex Edition will be the closest readers can get to holding the original artwork in your hands – right down to seeing faded speech balloons pasted to the surface, editorial and design marks, and Yeowell’s brush and pen strokes.
This edition will not be available digitally and is limited to only 1,000 first editions, 200 available from 2000AD with a limited edition bookplate signed by Steve Yeowell.
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
