Here’s this week’s run down of new comics on sale in comic shops across the UK, with the emphasis, as ever, on titles that are the work of British creators and published by British publishers, and my, aren’t we spoilt for choice this week.

First, there’s the comic shop release of the gorgeous Red Shoes and Other Tales from the talented team Metaphrog (see Jeremy Briggs’ review here), published in the US by Papercutz. I was lucky enough to catch up with the team at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, and they were deservedly enthused by this book’s release, so do check it out.

Then, there’s an added treat for those of you who’ve been buying  Vertigo Quarterly, because #3 features a strip written by Mark Buckingham, illustrated by Jessica Martin – the actress-turned artist (but still acting!) making her DC Comics debut.

Mark, who has been tutoring Jessica, consider her his star pupil and is delighted by the finished version of the story, set in a 1930’s Hollywood film studio with a host of starlets. “There’s some lovely colour from Andrew Dalhouse and playful lettering from Saida Temofonte which help make this little gem shine!” Mark tells us. “Thanks to editor Rowena Yow for letting us do it.”

“Mark has been my mentor these last two years,” says Jessica, who is currently starring in ELF at the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End. “He has always encouraged me and made me reach higher in my technique. I can’t believe how I’ve lucked out here, doing finishes on his story for this latest anthology from Vertigo.”

If you grab an issue and enjoy what you see, then head over to the MIWK Publishing web site and pre-order a copy of Jessica’s debut graphic novel, Elsie Harris Picture Palace, a tale that further develops her love of film history and the golden era of Hollywood that has already gathered an audience with her two comics It Girl and Vivacity, also available from MIWK. (Jeremy Briggs has posted reviews of both here and here).

This 150-page hardback tells the tale of young Londoner Elsie who embarks on a journey taking her from Elstree to Hollywood in the 1930s. Inspired by the unsung genius of the art creatives of the film industry, it’s a unique spin on the rags to riches story in the glamorous world of film, and having seen the pages, I’m happy to say it’s a delightful tale that you should really seek out and buy on release.

Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham's Miracleman #4 is on sale next week from Marvel.

Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham’s Miracleman #4 is on sale next week from Marvel.

Mark, of course, is busy working on restoring Miracleman for Marvel Comics. #3 of the stories created by him and Neil Gaiman is on sale now, with #4 on sale next week (4th November). Marvel recently announced that next April will see the the first ever printing of the long lost unpublished Miracleman #25, a staggering twenty years after it was completed, which will be followed by the completion of the character’s Silver Age story with three all new issues, followed by the Dark Age saga later in 2016.

Mark also provided the cover for Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Archives Omnibus Trade Paperback Volume 2, out this week from Titan Comics.

If you aren’t being spoiled enough with British creator talent on this week’s comic shelves, then the iscing on the cake surely has to be the release of writer Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and artist Sean Azzopardi‘s Necessary Monsters graphic novel from Devil’s Due/1FirstComics. In this cracking spy-horror graphic novel, originally serialised online twice a week, you’ll discover a world of horrors beneath the one we know, where the creatures of our nightmares stalk amongst humanity. The Chain polices this world, a covert agency of killer monsters keeping the human herd from growing too thin…

Featuring an introduction by Kieron Gillen, it’s another gem this week, alongside 2000AD with its terriifc “Bad Company” saga.

The Complete Love Hurts Trade Paperback On the US side, apart from the latest issues of ArcadiaThe Spire and Wild’s End: The Enemy Withinfrom Boom! Studios, have a look out for The Complete Love Hurts Trade Paperback by Kim W. Andersson, a collection of macabre stories featuring lovelorn supervillains, psychopathic online daters, murderous reality TV show stars, heartbroken cowboys, samurai and astronauts. A perfect Hallowe’en gift, this massive tome from Dark Horse sees Swedish comics creator Kim making his US debut (aside from the one story that appeared in the missing-in-action STRIP Magazine, of course), delivering a shocking series of short stories about love gone horribly wrong. What’s not to intrigue about romance comics with brutal, terrible twists which show that, no matter who you are or what you do, love can be deadly?

Phoenix 200 Cover

On Sale this week in selected WH Smiths as well as its usual outlets: The Phoenix, which has just reached its landmark 200th issue

Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic , which celebrates its 200th Issue this week, the first independent weekly comic (not counting DC Thomson or IPC/Fleetway titles) to reach such a landmark since TV21 way back in November 1969. It’s now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

• You may also be already thinking about Christmas, so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are available in all good bookshops at a steady pace right now.

Writer: Sean Michael Wilson Artist/ Cover Artist: Nami Tamura

Finally, Lee’s dream comes true, as she moves from her native Hong Kong to her dream location: the UK. And with her dream handsome guy: Matt. Exciting! But of course, then comes the reality of being in a new country, of actually living together, and that might not be so easy, especially as Matt’s best friend, Richard, seems more than a little jealous. And once again, wise Uncle Jun turns up to offer his advice. With art by Nami Tamura, a Japanese artist published by Kodansha.
